need Advice for parts

Post by Swimholm »

So its time to put a new carb on my truck

1964 f100, 292 y-block, with and old broke-down 2 barrel carburetor

Now its time to put on a new carb. cant find one anywhere as of yet, i can get one from holley for around 250$. But if I'm gonna dish out that kind of cash, might as well upgrade. . . .Right.

So, I'm thinking of running a new intake, that will fit a more modern, say, 650 cfm carb. Any suggestions, along with where to order the parts?

Thanks

Hey,

Glad to hear someone else is running a Y block. You can go a couple of different routes, but the easiest is to get a stock 4 barrel cast iron intake and throw a nice carb on it. The other route is to go with a Blue Thunder intake, but they are getting up in the 400+ dollar range since they only did one production run.

You could also go old school and run a 3X2 (poor flow plus bad mileage) or a 2X4, which is a little on the outrageous side.

You might want to check out Pony Carburetors http://www.ponycarburetors.com/.
A little pricey, but supposed to be very excellent.

Cosider rebuilding the one you have. One can of carb cleaner and a kit can be had for less than $30. The ford 2 barrel is very simple and was made by Holley.
A wise man once said that high performance Holleys were like pocket watches. To keep it time you haft to wind and set it every day. If you like fidling under the hood a high performance Holley is for you.
The Ford 2bbl though made by Holley does not reguire the fine tuning as their performance line. With that being said the Ford will peform relaibly but not have the same performance potential.

If you decide to go the 4bbl route, consider this. Most new nostalgia intakes for a Y block use the old ford Teapot pattern. An adapter must be used for mount a new Holley or Edelbrock-Carter. Starting in 57 4bbl intakes were made for the 1850 or current Holley bolt pattern. 4 bbls were found more often in Mercurys than Fords in 58-62. Keep this in mind at the salvage yard.
I'll haft to look up the formula for a 292 but most of the time people tend to over carburate their engines making them run rich.
A 2bbl matched to an engine just right will out perform a simular engine with a 4bbl that is too large.
Part of the fun with old engines especially Y blocks and flatheads is doing more with less.

Worth repeating.
If you have to jet-back a 650 Holley to keep it from dumping too much fuel into your little 292 (most come setup for something closer to a 350), are you really gaining anything?
I like the factory 2bbl's Ford used back then. Dirt simple. Unless the shaft is loose and flopping around, or you are missing parts, no reason a good cleaning and proper setup won't work like it should.

Holley's 390 cfm 4 barrel works like a charm on a stock 292. Mine ran perfectly and got excellent mileage once I tuned it. :D
