Well took the starter off and gave it a whack with a hammer, it worked. put it back on and some firework came from the solenoid when I turned the key, gave it a whack, dumped a little gas in the carb. barely hit the key and fired right up, finally success. I'm sure the carb. needs rebuilt, went in and got CJ and his eyes lit up and said thats gives me motivation to work on it. Thanks for everyones help, back to the rust work!

Sticky starter sounds like. Time to venture into the depths of something new. Tear it apart and just clean it up, it will probably be fine. Starters aren't very complicated. You need to get over your fear of things that have bolts vs welds holding them together.
