stereo/speakers?

Post by Anthony »

OK slicksters, it's been cold outside and I'm putting a tranny in the j-10 instead of working on the '66, but my head still ponders some of the hurdles. the latest is that my dash isn't cut for a radio and the tank is going to stay behind the seat so where are the speakers going? I'm thinking of a console under the dash and behind the shifters,( 4speed 4 wheel drive) with the radio in the front and two speakers in the sides. has anyone got pictures of different radio speaker setups for those of us preparing to make this hurdle? I know the well is deep here so come on guys, let's see them stereo ideas. thanks Anthony

My Solution

Post by DanSanDiego2000 »

Anthony,
This was the solution I devised. I made them for myself, and sold additional sets on eBay to about 16-20 Slick owners across the country.

All I run is an amplifier under the seat, and plug in an iPod, MP3 player, CD player/FM receiver or any other portable device.

So, I can have my music, or if my daughter is along, I let her plug her iPod in instead.

Clean dash, speakers are not easily seen from outside the vehicle, still appears stock.

I like it.

Dan

With an RF Remote, nothing has to be in the dash.

You could install it under the seat along with the amp like Dan said.

I'm 5 hrs away from my slick right now, but I built a slimline box and mounted 2 sony 6x9s in it and let it piggyback the tank. It's low enough to not be seen and high enough to be heard well. Just use slim speakers and make the box tight, you will need to port it so just drill a couple of 1" holes in the top or sides. 2 small "L" brackets or even zip ties will hold it in place and the seat against it will keep it from rattleing. Carpet the whole thing if you like, but definitely carpet the bottom to avoid scratching the tank. It keeps you from having to cut those door panels! Hope this helps.

i only have one of my stock door panels. so i used it as a template and made 2 new ones out of corian. corian is a material used for counter tops, made by dupont. for those not familiar with it. its basicly a hard plastic about 1/2inch thick that comes in 100's of colors and is realy easy to work with using woodworking tools. the stuff i used is white with some slight amount of grain to it giving it a look close to marble.(i fabricate/install granite and marble countertops, so i realy like its looks) the speakers are stock speaker from a late 90's saturn. they seem to be a bit more recessed then other speakers, the speaker grills are flush with the face of the door panel. on the back of the panel i also put some speaker jacks like you find on your home stereo so then it can all be unhooked if you ever need to take the panel off to work on window crank or such. i took my router and routed out about a 1/4inch from the back of the panel so the speakers would sit flush with the front there are no protruding cheap wire mesh grills that never stay. i never have very good luck with aftermarket speakers in door panels, grills always fall off then the the tweets get kicked and fall off. i have been realy happy with them and the saturn factory speakers sound pretty good considering they are factory.

I used two small speakers mounted to 1/4" plywood and mounted them in the stock location in dash. Will add 2 more under the seat later.
