skip says he thinks ive got a dana 60 in my truck. What I know as a dana 60 is bigger than what I have. Then on the other hand what i know as a dana 60 may not be one. Any one know what is supposed to be in these things??? I know its not a ford 9" mine has a rear cover.

I got a 64 with a Dana 44 rear end.

Until my son bought his 65, I had never seen a Dana 44 under a 1/2 ton truck, with 5 lug axles...didn't even know there was such an animal.
His rear end sure looks like one, though & it's one low-geared s.o.b. too! :shock:

Robert, no they don't. 8.8's look like the 9", the D60 and D44 look similar. The dana alxes will have a D60 or D44 stamped (actually I think it's forged into the housing) on the upper right (if I recall) corner of the pumpkin around 2 o'clock if you are looking at it from the rear. They will also have a build code on the tube to dicipher everything else.

Dana 44's were fairly common under Slicks for some reason.

all the posi's or lockers were Dana 44's and the weirder gear ratios were, too.

The 8.8s doesn't look like a 9". The 9" has a chunk ane the 8.8 is a rear loader like the Danas. I believe the 79 or 80 model trucks had 8.8s under some models.

Dana 44 was standard with 3spd OD, or any manual 240 I-6 except in E series where 240s came with 9" FoMoCo"hotchkiss", front loading type [aka common 9" FoMoCo] diffy, as noted above a "chunk, pun'kin, or pumpkin or 3rd member" depending where y'all are from.

I don't recall seeing too many Dana 44s behind A/Ts tho'.

JC, I Had a 3.89:1 Detroit Locker with a 28 spline 9" FoMoCo rear axle assy in a late 66 SWB Style side, CC, F-100 Unit. Until I got that I thought 3.89:1 was a P-Car only ratio it had a letter code on the Data plate and a DSO signature option# also.

And I concur with Jim, above 100%. . .
No Dana Built, Dana Rear Axle assy, including an 8.8 looks like a FoMoCo 9" Front loading differential. :roll:

I could understand a novice thinking an 8" Ford, Hotchkiss type, front loading rear, like Comet, Falcon V8, Mustang Maverick,Cougar, Fairlane, Torino, etc. came with is a 9" which it's NOT. But there's no mistaking a 9" with anything else IMHO. That bottom most nut accessablity is the key. You cannot remove that nut from a 9" using a deep socket & any extension, it just won't fit in there. :shock:

Last year at TURKEY ROD RUN run we had that F-100 long bed 300 6 cylinder that came from the fire dept. that had that big rear with 3:54 gears 5 lug removable brake drums,,,Loooked just like a 3/4 ton with those real big axles lot bigger than a 9",, we have a spicer rear end in a 65 that takes the same axles as the 48-56 trucks that was light duty behind whats left of a 6 cylinder chassis

This is what I know. It was purchased from the ford dealership in Santa Maria CA in 1965. I am pretty sure it was special order but I can't confirm it. I still have the dealer optioned toneau cover and fridgeking A/C. I also have a set of 5 lug split rims, I don't know if these are rare or not but I have only seen 8 lug spit rims. My dad purchased it from the original owner in 1969. It is a short bed, but from what my dad told me, the original owner used it to tow his horse trailer. The original owner was the Chief of Police in Santa Maria, CA and I know he had some sort of pull with the dealer. Does this help? :dontknow:

Jarrod, do your 5 lug splits happen to be 16"? i have a couple 5 hole 16s that are not splits but i always wondered if they made those in splits too.

For anyone interested,,,, In my case, a F100 with a 240 I6, 1965 with a 4 speed floor tranny, came with a 3.50 Ford 9" rear. Not the Dana.

Postive, no doubt.

Built Feb/March of 65 in Kansas City.

I am 99 percent sure they are 16 inch. They are the original rims with the truck
