Spare tire mounting ideas???

Hey guys,

I figure I should start carrying a spare around with me as I drive my '66 4x4 more and more... so that brings up the question of where to mount my spare tire? I like the idea of mounting it under the bed, but my truck doesn't have the under bed mount et al.

I'm running 33x12.5 tires on 15x10 wheels, so the spare will be a pretty good size where ever I decide to carry it...

Thoughts? Ideas?

unless you want to lay under the truck to mess with the spare. i personally do not.

In the bed and I prefer behind the passenger side wheel well next to the tail gate. (easy access) here is the one I had in my Econoline. looking to do the same with my '66 4x4.

I've had this on and off several times trying to decide if I want to keep it there.

That might work out for you, but I once had a good ole' Dentside ('76 F250, 390/C6) with the spare on the front like that. Although I was surprised that it didn't interfere with the cooling (I didn't have a hubcap on it though) it did seem to always be in the way when I wanted to open the hood or do anything under it! I wouldn't fight with that situation again...

For as many times (once in 33yrs) as I have had to use my spare while out on the road, if I was worried about not carrying a spare, I'd keep it under the bed. If I had get it out, I'd take my floor mat out and toss it down to keep myself from laying in the mud/water/slush. I suspect even a thief would rather steal a tire out of the back or front than from under the truck.

Remember, you don't have to have a 12.5" wide spare...just try to make it 33" tall.

I've got the complete rack for under the truck that came off the 66, did the complete restoration on it (black powder coat) then realized I couldn't use it any longer because of the "Okla. Twice pipes" coming out the back, Da! you can have it if it doesn't cost me anything to ship.
I went to my trailer supply and picked up a spare tire mounting rack they had and mounted it in the center of the bed, under the tunnel cover, comes off easily enough if I really want to carry anything long that won't fit around it

I have been thinking about using an older Bronco rear tire swing away gate.
My truck sits so high anyway I don't mind it looking like a utilitarian 4x4

nice as long as you keep the lowering tool with you.
once made a small fortune off a guy with a new chebby truck that left his jack and lowering tool out of the truck , simple flat turned into 35 mile tow and got a nice $50 tool rental fee for my neighbor who had the same type of truck and was willing to lend me the tool.

I think someone could make some money if they marketed a kit to put a cable lowering system on older trucks.

just take the system off 97 above Ford with the key lock mechanism, be sure if locked get the key we broughtin a 2003 and key missing and was aready disc. by Ford, so universal key w have here fits all known at the torch

Look under that Aerostar that we use for their IFS. They have a cable lowering system that uses the jack handle to lower it. It attaches with 4 screws to bottom of truck.
Hehe, when we harvested the Aerostar IFS, also got the spare tire carrier system, the tall floor shifter, and an aluminum driveshaft in my son's 63. Oh yeah, I have an Aerostar drink holder sitting on the floor hump of my 66.
