take however long you think it'll take to do the job and multiply it by 50. I am not exaggerating much if at all. As the other posters have said, blasting is a dirty, sloooooooooow job. As the other posts have said, this crap will get EVERYWHERE and especially get to places it shouldn't (embed itself into the nylon window guides thereby making sandpaper guides. Works great at making windows with translucent stripes. Don't just plain sand unless you don't value your lungs. There is a low dusting version that works as fine as blasting gets.

Did I say the job was slow?

Suggestion: find a place to dip these parts to get rid of the rust as an alternative to blasting.

Yeah, a reciprocating compressor won't do the job for sand blasting an entire vehicle. You REALLY have to have a screw-type compressor. Its not the PSI that's important, it's the cfm. My dad's been sandblasting for years and has a 600# capacity pot. Personally I wouldn't DIY sandblasting the whole truck unless I had access to a good compressor and 600# pot.

Also, DO NOT use playsand or creek sand for sandblasting. Go and get sandblast sand. The grain is uniform, it's dry and it's chemically treated to cut down on dust. A proper sandblast hood is also helpful since they are slightly pressurized AND most have a little heat exchanger that keeps the hood nice and cool. Don't forget your hearing protection either.

Oh, and it takes more sand than you think to finish a project. You'd be surprised how fast you can go through 1000 pounds of the stuff.

I just talked to a rep at American Striping in Norfolk Va, it will probably run me 800-900 bucks to strip my cab, bed, doors, fenders and hood and coat them in with Ospho. The guy recomended Ospho over primer since I will still have welding and bodywork to do when I get it back. How does that sound?

Sounds like the same prices they charge in Houston. I would go that route before I tried to do it myself. Well worth the money. Also the material they use here doesn't remove rust but will take all paint and primer off. It doesn't hurt any body filler that may be on the truck.

F-Zilla,

That sounds like a fair deal. no more than $1000 is good.

As for the Ospho, I would for sure do that. I wish I could get a hold of it here! I know you can get it a ACE in some parts of the country but I have not found anyone around here.

Good Luck and have fun!

This is an another option

Post by PFM-64f100 »

http://www.sodablasting.com/products.html found this place by me in Irving Texas. I e-mailed them and to rent the tow able compressor and soda blaster it was about $200 a day. The media (soda) is about $25 a bag and from what I read a bag will do about 1hr or 2hr worth of blasting. I will be doing this to my Torino soon and the truck will be next a lot cheaper then having some one do it. I'm sure it's hard work but I am not scared of hard work. Something to thing about. :)

soda will not remove rust and leaves metal to smooth for paint i stripped the paint off mine with a razor blade down to the primer then sanding was a breeze then you only have to blast the rust

Man, that Torino had quite the case of cowl rot! Looks like you did some good repairs, though. :thumright:

a fun little project but I really and tired of fixing sheet metal right now. Yea the shop has taken a long time to get but it sure is nice with the space to work. I still got more to do on it (drive ways instead of dirt for one thing). :) The pickup will be next after the torino and it will get the same treatment as the torino.

Now if I could only find a 4X4 crew cab slick then the shop would be complete. Anyone know of one in the north texas area?
