phils 61 unibody build

Post by imstobu »

been quiet on here lately, didnt have a slick since last fall. Picked up a 61 unibody last weekend and going to completly rebuild it. Has been off the road since 1977 but luckily sat in a garage during that time. Have plenty of plans for her and definitly want to make it to slickstock with her. So I have allot of work cut out for me.

Cool. Is the powertrain out? Looks a bit high on the front end.

Looks like you have a nice place to work as well.

dot, no it has a 223 six in it right now, I dont like how high the front end is, looking at options of lowering, but dont want too low. would like to keep the straight axle and just put disc brakes on it. want to keep it somewhat simple and old school, otherwise will never get it done by next summer.

Phil, you can adjust the height by removing leaves from the springs, if you don't want to go too low try 2. Remove every other leaf starting with the one under the main leaf with the eyes.
Mono leafs are real nice too, they will set you right where mine is now - I have them. There was a pair on Ebay Sunday for a real good price, I like how mine ride.
T-5 behind that engine gets real good mileage - ask Fred.
Looks like a real solid truck, good to see you back!

greg, do you have mono springs on both front and rear? how much of a drop? what brand did you use, I like the stance of your truck.
I am thinking of going the T-5 route on mine, dont want an automatic and overdrive would be nice.

ezernut the wheels and tires are like new on it, the other two centers and 4 wheel locks are laying in it. I may end up putting them on my daily beater.

The avatar pic is the Monos in the front and stock in the rear, I dropped the rear since then by pulling some leaves. All the Monos are made by No Limit, other places sell their springs. I don't know if I am going to get them for the rear yet, I am not sure if I will be adjusting it again after I get my front axle dropped.
Pulling 3 leaves got me to about the same height in the front but it was kind of spongy. The monos ride much better and support the front well.
Here are some pics, may help you decide which way to go, there are some in my album here too.

I believe the monos are 4" of drop. I actually didn't measure each thing I did getting it down. My tires are way shorter than the stock size too though.
