FINALLY took out the original worn out points distributor and coil. Ran a new 12ga ignition wire to by pass the resistor wire and installed a Pertronix Flamethrower II coil and billet distributor along with Accel 8mm wires. Purrs great now, no hitching and stumbling!

Re: What have you done to your slick today??
finally got done with the knuckle bearing replacement.
found out after greasing the new wheel bearings that instead of an inner and outer they gave me 2 inners.
cant return a greased bearing so its resting in a ziploc baggie. i can use it on the other side so its not a big deal.
of course i had already popped out the races too so i had to press the outer race back in then clean up a used outer bearing.
all thats left is tightening up the tire, im waiting for my compressor to fill and taking a short break.

Re: What have you done to your slick today??
finally removed the emergency brake (front part) cable and its brackets, removed the fuel line (and its brackets), removed both doors, their mechs, removed the exhaust pipes and mufflers etc, removed the wiring from the rear of the truck, sprayed WD 40 on everything left with threads....
results:
cab is ready for media blaster
frame is ready for media blaster
bed is ready for media blaster
at this point i started thinking, my blaster guy, said would you like for me to bring my rig to you, that way you wont have to haul all 6 of those pieces to me ...
i'm thinkin YES...that way I can leave the sand, in the same area where i will build my barn

Re: What have you done to your slick today??
Yesterday, I replaced the carrier bearing and got to drive "Old Yeller" for the first time last night. What a beast! Some guys like to lower their Slicks down into the weeds, which is fine, but I prefer having a truck that I can haul things in.
Today I will change the rear end oil, replace the leaky right rear axle flange gasket and find out why the dash lights do not work.

Re: What have you done to your slick today??
Changed the right axle flange gasket then removed the rear cover of the third member to change the oil and found that someone had welded the spider gears together. Arrrrrrrgh! Now I know why the truck was acting like the rear was posi traction. Well, one of the previous owners lived in Flagstaff and used this truck to haul lumber. I guess that he wanted the extra traction.
I also greased up the king pins and tie rod ends hoping to stop the truck from meandering down the road. Test drive to come later....
I also found that I need to repack and adjust the front wheel bearings. They are a little loose.

Re: What have you done to your slick today??
positraction has clutches that allow one tire to turn more or less depending on r or l turns.azjake wrote:Changed the right axle flange gasket then removed the rear cover of the third member to change the oil and found that someone had welded the spider gears together. welding the spider gears does not allow this so on tight turns on pavement you likely will hear tire squawking and experience some hopping.
wont be so bad on gravel but this "perma-posi" will after a while wear your rear tires funny.
should the welds break you will go nowhere until you reweld or replace.
