What did the backlash measure with clean gears? Are the required thrust washers in the carrier?
It takes 5 minutes and $40 worth of tools if you have to buy them to make sure it's set up correctly and won't potentially leave you stranded. All you have to do is stick the dial indicator on it to check backlash and smear some gear marking compound/ anti-seeze on it to check the pattern. It would also be a good idea to check the torque on the ring gear bolts. You're working with a mystery setup, not a factory-assembled axle. My
