Paul there is a lot of old school methods that I think are long forgotten,, this particular topic my uncle showed me how to tune back yard, in which he was way beck in the Korean War in Korea in the motor pool, still had to have a feeler gauge for spark plug gaps,,, another older guy showed me how to tear a trans apart with basic hammer, punch, flat steel and 1/2 and 9/16 wrench and another one how to fix a warp door without all those fancy pullers,, it's like going to the parts store and all he knows is punching numbers in computer,, I believe those days are going away fast

Don't know what happened with the petronix in this engine, but I can say I will not use points unless I have to. The one thing no one mentioned was checking the play in the timing chain, so I will suggest it now. As to setting timing, I use a timing light and use it, but set the timing afterward by ear. I also own a dwell meter, but don't use it as I have never been able to use it effectively. With GM you could use it easily , with Ford it was PITA. What I found was when setting either Ford or GM products by dwell meter it was never right. Maybe it was just me that wasn't right, I just could not get things right with one.
