I like factory installed, like a 352 in a 65 verse having the 302 in my 65.

I would love to have a 427 SOHC aka Cammer, but other than that 460 or a stroked variation of a 460. If it was a daily driver I would want a F.I. 351W or a 5.4 3 valve.

Ok , I'll have to chime in with my ol' 223, runs great, simple to work on, 17 mpg.

Like you stated, it would depend on it's intended use. If I was making it a daily driver, I really like the 300 6-cylinder. For a cruiser, I love the 351 Cleveland or a 429.

There is no replacement for displacement 8)

460 bored 0.030" over = 466 cubic inches for Ford glory!

Goodness, Guess I'll list all the ones I woulda liked in my truck. 514+ yep gotta love the cubes but pass, too much fuel. Triton V10 w 6 speed would just look cool as heck in there - not on my budget though. Hot rodded Y block, just looks cool, won't take a tranny I need. 351 Cleveland, small block is good for all around use with passable mileage - but hard to find and $$$ to build though. Think I'm gonna end up with a hotrodded 300-6, dressed properly it'll look cool and nostalgic, passable mileage, good power, nearly indestructable. Whatever it is it's gotta take an overdrive auto trans.

Well for me there is 5 types of trucks...
  1. Original :)
  2. Nostalgic 8)
  3. Street Rod
  4. Hauler :x
  5. Cruiser :P
So then here are my choises for engines...
  1. Whatever came in your truck. Get it to run and run it right.
  2. Have to go with a big old FE 390 or 427 with a 4-speed!
  3. There is no replacement for displacement! 460 or bigger!! C-6 or 4-speed.
  4. I would love to put a good Diesel in one, like one out of a new supper duty! Have to go with a new auto.
  5. The best engine I have ever owned, my 300 I6! It gets 18mpg and can burn up a ricer any time it wants! I would realy like to put a T-5 behind it.

65-up for best all-around engine i go with the 300-6.
for 61-64 the y has a little more zip than the 223, so a built 312 would be nice.
no  351M/400 and i would rather use the 300 than the 302.

i have 2 FEs, a couple ys and one of each 6(223/300) that all run good in slicks now.

if my pockets were deeper i would go with building up a 429/460.instead i use whats available and make it work for my need.

A guy is wise to go with what he knows IMO, so I reused the best engine in any vehicle I have had, for all around balanced performance and gas mileage, and have recycled my '78 302 into a 306 with a few goodies on it.

But. if a person had unlimited budget and gas money, there is a no-brainer out there. http://www.carrollshelbyent.com/engine_about.cfm

also here is a nice christmas card list too
http://www.roushperf.com/engines.shtml

and of course one cannot forget the Limas. http://www.fordracingparts.com/crateengine/bigblock.asp

unfortunately I am not that rich guy.
Next up for me will be to create a mild 393 or 408 stroker out of the ' 83 351w currently in my Uni.

Life is unfortunately real to me. :?

This is a great subject since my eletronic ignition 300 -6 is knockin. I personally have always thought a 289 was the best all around mill, Itll smoke those too fast and ferious bumble bee cars with the cheesy decals.(how much faster do those decals make um anyhow?) But im looking for a 302 to put in mine because Im a poor guy who likes the sound of a v8 dual exaust and i have friends that get 18 mpg with a carb 302 in their slicks.plus the parts are plentiful. I drive my truck too much to have that 429 cid i really want.
 289
 302
:steering: 429!!

I notice a couple of votes for the 429. I have never messed with a 429 at all, so I got to ask. Why choose a 429 over a 460? Same size motor but you are giving up some displacement.

Well really somtimes theres not too much logic to my decisions,I just remember those muscle cars with the 429'S in them being so very bad to the bone when i was a kid. Most of my learning was when i was young anyway, I've been so caught up in a work eat sleep way of life I havent took too much time to pay attention to the rest of the world just sleep deprivated hammer down truckin and trying not to hit the old people and teenagers who wanta be eaten up by a big truck. I cant bear the burden of feeding those big blocks the gas anyway but i would love to see what your truck would do hammer to the floor just once(from the driver seat of course)LOL :steering:

Any engine is fine with me as long as the block is painted black. Valve covers etc. can be chrome or any color in the rainbow as long as the block is black. I don't like blue engines, I hate orange engines, and those green engines just really piss me off. Thanks, Lyman. ( My engine is currently blue with blue overspray all over the firewall.)
