Living large with a large steering wheel

Post by The Good Humor Man »

I don't consider myself a big guy (36 waist) and today I was trying to get more room for my belly under the steering wheel. I removed the top bracket holding the column under the dash, and figured that it would just go up into the slot, and put the top bracket where the bottom bracket was, and I would get extra room, didn't work well for me, I did get a few extra inches.
What is the best, cheapest, and easiest way to get more belly room on the steering wheel?

Get a smaller wheel or shorten the column.

for a 65 or 66 twin i-beam, install a tilt column from a later 73-79 truck.
if you are talking about the f250 4x4 there is no easy way to do as the steering shaft is all one piece.i suppose you could shorten and get a steering u-joint welded in to change the angle.
not sure what the straight axle guys do there.
the steering wheels got smaller as power steering became standard equipment which is probably a good thing because lack of excercise turning the manual wheel created bigger waistlines.

Ask Fanatic to post the pictures of how he did his truck. He has plenty of room and I think it was fairly simple. Thanks, Lyman.

How about changing the stance of the seat? Or at least smaller adjuster slides.

Relax guys the horn ring is gone, but the steering wheel will stay.
I like the big wheels, the belly may have to go before the big wheel.
