Anybody out there with Volare front suspentions?

Post by DEREKBB64 »

Hey guys looking for some ideas on what to use for a steering shaft? I have been useing a sloppy home built one but it's time to do it right.
It's a 1964, with a 1973 150 4x4 colum and the Crysler box. The 73 colum uses the same u joint from 73-79 Any help would be great,Thanks.

Pics would help.
The Volare clipped truck I had, that I sold to Dean, had a Chrysler steering shaft out of the PS box with a rag joint. That, I had to redrill to match the Ford rag joint end of a '67 column. so it went Chrysler PS box , Chrysler steering shaft, with rag joint to rag joint end of a 67 Ford truck column. Done. This was in a 63 uni.

PS how do you like that Volare clip? Both of us agree, former owner and current owner, that the Volare clip is too mushy .

I am the present owner of the infamous Jinx, last year I upgraded the steering column and shaft in it to a 88 F150 column and had the chrysler shaft altered at the rag joint to fit the ford shaft.

I plan on changing the volare out and putting either the dakota kit under or setting the body on a Grand Marquis frame. I just recieved the dakota kit for my 61, but it allows me to check to see if I can rebuild the frame rails and use the kit in Jinx. I will still be using the column but may have to change the shaft when the change occurs.

I would love to post pics but for some reason photobucket is giving me a hard time.I think the difference is that i am not useing a rag joint column but rather a 4x4 column that is splined with a universal joint.I think im getting to the point of just coughing up the cash and puttin a borgesen joint shaft in.

As for the Volare clip i like the ride but it is kinda big.I actually have quite a bit of tention on the torsion bars with the weight of the bigblock in there.Would i put one in again...probably not, would i cut this one out i can't see that either. If i was to do it again i would most likely go with a Mustang II style.

If you would like to see pics of what i'm trying to describe PM me your Email and i can send them to you.
Thanks Derek.

I have installed some Volare's and used combinations of stock Ford and Mopar parts. If possible, use new Borgeson or Flaming River u-joints to eliminate any problems. This is not an area to skimp on.
If you continue to buy imports, where will your children work?

Yea 15 or so years ago when i put the front end in all the knuckles were pretty tight and it has worked well until now things are showing their age.I guess i'll have to pull it apart and do some spline counting and see what i can cobble together.

P.S Johnny i think one of the big differences with the Volare front i have is that i pulled mine out of a EX cop car with a big sway bar, but swapped out the power steering to a manual steering box for clearance. This truck actulally rides and handles better than my 92 F 150.What concerns me is how parts avalibility will be in years to come for the Volare front.
