New Truck

Post by Wall Flood »

And new member. Wasnt sure where to post this so thought Id put it here in a general forum.

This is supposedly a 1963 F100 I purchased for 1200 in the rust belt.

Ive had a lot of old trucks before, but new to the F100. If all goes well this will be restored to "Work Truck" quality from the frame up. I dont care about dents and dings, but I do plan to remove all rust, encapsulate with some type of product, paint, and drive daily at least six months out of the year.

Currently Im having troubles keeping this rig running, as sometimes it will start and others it wont at all. It idles way to high, and many times it turns over but wont fire. Its getting gas because you can smell it down the street.

After putting in new cap, rotor, plugs, points, condensor etc I cant get it to fire at all. Im sure I got it all in right as I simply R and R everything one step at a time, and I know how to gap plugs and points.

Oh well.....[/img]

Make sure your getting power to the coil when the key is in the cranking position. If not then start by checking to make sure the wire connected to the "I" terminal on the starter solenoid is connected and not loose, corroded etc.

BTW, Nice truck, im very jealous. :D

I did think of the Solenoid, and the connections seem to be ok.

But why would it fire right away sometimes, then not others? Sometimes I can get right in it and it will fire right up with hardly a crank. The other day it took 45 minutes for it to finally decide to start.

When I chase this bug down and fix it its going to be a blast to drive. Right now I cannot trust it-

Weren't the F100's coil sprung in the front?
I also notice the front differential is on the passenger side; was this truck converted to 4x4?
The bed says F350, but the Dana 44 and 9inch say 1/2 ton.
Good looking truck; I've been wanting to see more 4x4's!

If you an smell gas down the street are you sure it's getting into the carb correctly.... it might be blocked, or the float mis adjusted. You could be starving or flooding pretty easily... and from the look of the fuel all over the carb in the above picture, it might be time for a cleaning/rebuild.

Welcome from Louisiana. Decent looking truck. Looks like a good project. Nicer grill than most. You're off to a good start by posting pictures up front. We like pictures LOL

1964 and earlier were straight axles.

actually, bed says: Correct Bed for the 63 (non-Unibody) pickups as well as 4x4's 61-64 (and maybe through 66?) Affectionally called "wrong beds" (same bed as 57-60 trucks)

Sounds like a possible bad coil...if ya had a spare you could swap it out right quick like.

Going to be a real work horse when you get the bugs worked out....oh and :welcome: from South Carolina. :)

I bought a new coil and voltage regulator today. Will put that in tomorrow monring. A carb rebuild is definitely in the very near future, but as I see it, it should still run right now though certainly not its best.

Oh, and thanks for all the welcomes, you guys are a wealth of knowlegde-

Welcome from the Portland, Oregon area.
Nice truck. Doesn't look like it has been molested or butchered. Price seems really right, too.
My first thoughts re the starting / running problems were vacuum leak and / or electrical.
This will give you a chance to hone your troubleshooting skills.

Yep, thats what Im thinking, vacuum or electrical.

And youre right about the "Molested" thing. Ive driven hundreds of miles and hours and hours of driving to and from, looking at trucks, scouring the internet, and I cannot believe some of the trucks Ive seen and whats been done to them. Needless to say most of them will never see the road again.

Yes the differential is on the passenger side, as well as the transfer case. Is that incorrect? Ill try to post pictures of that tomorrow or later in the week.

As a side note I cannot get the T-case to shift, but that is not on the top of the list right now. Its close though....

My list is kinda like this:
Tune up
Change all hoses and tubing
Brakes (they work pretty good just wanna look at them)
Bigger or dual chamber master cylinder (maybe)
Change all u-bolts
Heater and fan
Windshield wiper motor (works but thought Id R and R just in case)
Dash Switches (needs a little work)
Leaf springs replaced or adjusted

Need to get all tis and more done before winter.

Any other suggestions? The idea is to make it trustable and road worthy as a daily driver, then work on restoration in the future-

i would save yourself a lot of trouble and coat the tank with a liner and replace fuel filter these tanks tend to get rusty on the inside i think the liner i was buying at napa was a blue in color and around 40 bucks worth every penny if you ask me keeps you from being stuck on the road with a bad filter

Im up by the great lakes. Lots of road salt here.

I think its a crime personally, so dont get me started. If they can put a man on the moon you think they could come up with something better to keep from destryoing everyones cars and immediately voiding warranties just for being in the region.

Its too bad these trucks werent made with galvanized metal. Since mine will be drivin in the winter the idea is to remove all rust, inhibit, prime, encapsulate, and wash regularly-
