Fuel tank swap using a Bronco II tank

Post by My1stSlick »

Man this site has some great info on it!

I have decided to go with an 85-90 Bronco II tank for my fuel tank swap. I looked at the Mustang tank and while it seems to be a very flush fit under the bed, I REALLY prefer the extra capacity that the Bronc tank offers (23 gallons!)
Someone had previously provided a link to a similar swap http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jims65/rearfueltankinstall.html

I'd like to take it one step further by replacing the mechanical fuel pump with an electric one. I will also be using SS braided fuel lines and AN fittings. I plan in braising new AN fitted couplers to the sending units inlet/outlet piping.
So with that in mind, I need help selecting the correct sending unit pickup assembly and pump. Please see the links below.

http://www.mtscompany.com/bronco.htm

Go the the bottom of the page.. the last entry. You will see the tank, followed by a couple different sending units and an OEM "in tank" pump.

My big concern about the OEM pump is that it was used on the later model fuel injected Bronco.
Do you think the PSI in the line created by the pump will be too high for the carb? I assume I will need a return line back to the tank and a pressure regulator to compentate for this correct?
Is their another pump someone could recommend?
Would an aftermarket, external pump be a better option?

Sorry for all the questions guys. I haven't done alot of ad-hoc fabrication on carb'd engines. Trying not to blow myself and my boy into the next zipcode. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you runing carb get the sending unit for the 85. Sending unit: w/o fuel injection (1985) FMSU-4600C. Plus you don't have to do a return line.

The EFI pumps can be made to work with a carb (like mine is) but you have to run a return line and 2 psi regulators. I tired runing one reg that would do Carb pressure but that just shunted to much fuel in the return line. Causing the pump to surge from 20 to 4 psi. what I did was turned down the first reg to 20 psi then installed a second reg with no return to 4 psi. This does work and has worked for over a year now. It doesn't look to good but works. My plans are to upgrade to EFI sometime in the future so I left the EFI pump in my tank.

Hope this helps...
