How to clean a C6 trans?

Post by Gary Seymour »

I want to clean and detail my C6 before it goes in the chassis and put new seals in it, etc....

Anybody know a good way to get the aluminum housing clean? Can / should the trans be painted?

Gary,
There's a cleaner that's used on commerical equipment that works well.
Don't know the name of it but its stout and works great on aluminum.

We used it on construction equipment and it would remove the oxidized paint layer in about 10 minutes.

Might check with a local truck or farm / construction dealer about getting some.

wash it down with caustic soda. dont let it soak in it. that will get the junk off and make it dull. then there is another mild acid wash that will shine it up. but i cant remember the name of it. it is yellow colored. thats all i can remember about it.

Thanks for the tips!! I think I'll try the Gunk and pressure washer first, since that stuff is readily available. Maybe I'll post some pics!!! :woohoo:

Ive tried simple green, POR marine clean, Dawn dish soap, gas, and kerosene.

K works well but I swear by Autozone cheap brake clean.
You can degrease a trans with about 6 cans. NOTHING works better

That AutoZone stuff must be great! It changed the air cleaner housing, master cylinder and fixed the rust in the firewall and did some rewiring!

I gotta get me some of that and spray it on my wife!
