Towing a 4x4

Post by tomsrod »

I need to move my truck about 30 miles for paint. Can a 4x4 be towed using a tow bar (all four wheels on the ground), hubs in "free" position and transmission and transfer case in neutral? Do the drive shafts need to be removed?

Transfer case in neutral & the hubs unlocked would be best.
I've seen plenty of Jeeps & others towed with tow bars, but I've never been sucessful doing it that way...the truck being towed wants to steer itself.
I didn't care enough to find out what I was doing wrong, so I just bought a trailer. Problem solved. :D

If it starts to rain, they'll tax the splash.
If you want to fish, they'll tax the bass.
If you plant a yard, they'll tax the grass.
If you don't play nice, they'll fine your *$#!

yes, that is the best way. whether flat towed , on a dolly or on the back of a towtruck.

thats how I moved my 2wd, looking in the rearview and seeing the steering wheel whipping around when you make turns is kinda freaky!
