Flowmasters or ???

Post by qwertyd10n »

Hello everyone,

I've been thinking for a while about putting a different set of mufflers on my truck to enhance that V8 sound a little... but I don't want it to be too crazy loud either. After throwing some ideas around during the Sunday chat I was pretty sure I wanted a set of one of Flowmaster's 40 series. However after doing a little more research, I'm wondering how loud and how much of the Flowmaster "drone" those mufflers will give me.

I'm really curious to hear how different mufflers sound on engines similar to my 352. I have a set of long tube headers and then true dual exhaust dumping right in front of the rear axle. If I do replace the mufflers, I'm also thinking of having a H pipe made up to equalize between the two cylinder banks.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
Dion

2 cents worth.
I put a set of Flowmaster 40s on my 66 Fury with a 383. It had cherry bombs on it when I got it. After putting the FM on they sounded just like the cherry bombs. I did not like the resonation the crude rumble just a bit too loud, and I like loud.
Loud pipes save lives.
I like turbo muffler with a crossover but I have not experimented with too many Fords yet.

Mufflers.
Here we go again.
IMHO (or maybe not 'so humble'), my personal choice is Flowmaster 40's with a cross over H-pipe.
Before you install any crossover, use some cheap silver spray paint on the exhaust pipes around the transmission area and drive the truck.
Put your H-pipe where the paint burns off.

Guys.
My Flowmaster's do not drone unless you're next to a concrete wall or barrier on the interstate/ toll way.
Then the echo can be annoying.
I get more misery from tires.

I agree with Skip and Anthony. I love the 40 flows on my 302 almost have to roll the windows down going down the road to hear them good. but enough to make people turn to see what cranked up in a parking lot. :boohoo: music to my ears.

fe's are a "quiet" engine. so what sounds loud on a windsor or Y may not sound as loud on an FE.
i used dynomax super turbos and though they sounded good, they were not loud enough for me.
this time i am going to try some flowmaster knock offs to see if i like the sound.
if not, i am not out much and could probably sell them on craigslist to get some of my $$$ back.
and the "drone" is more about where the pipes exit.

Alot depends on how long the tail pipe is (after the muffler) And what ezer said..

The Flowmaster 40's on my 65 with a 390 sound just loud enough when in town to have people turn their heads to look and "sounds great" when my foot accidentally slips on the gas peddle. It does have an H pipe. As has been stated earlier, I had more noise with off road tires......I wont switch.

Magnaflow all the way, ive had the flowmaster 40 series, 2000 rpm drone drove me nuts, they sound great when accelerating and such, but they do drone , i had them dumpped before the axle, out the side before the tires, out the side after the tires, and straight out the back, it never went away,, my magnaflows do not do that

For all the guys who recommended the Flowmaster 40s, can you be a little more specific as to which blend of 40s you have:
  • 40 Series Delta Flow
  • Super 40
  • 40 Series Classic
  • Original 40 Series
And as to the comment about how long the tail pipe after the muffler is, what I've been reading says it should be at least 12" past before dumping... does that sound right?

Cheers,
Dion

Maybe the tailpipe length and exit is a Flowmaster thing??

With my Hookers, there is no drone. It has a very deep tone at idle. Cruising in overdrive, at about 2000rpm, the road noise and exhaust noise are in competition to be the loudest; conversation is possible. Acceleration sounds great! I like the way they sound much more than any chambered Flowmaster I've heard.

Something I have heard to cure drone is to install a different muffler on each pipe. For instance, install one that's 10" long on the left and one that's 13" long on the right. That way they don't resonate. I don't know if it really works. I have not yet had to try it.

two of the sweetest sounding FE powered Slicks I have heard are Wyatt's on the left and Truckfarmer's on the right
To my knowledge they are both flowmaster 40 classics.

don't use glasspacks on a stock-cammed FE. They sound like they came straight off the Reserve.

the muffler question is the easy side of it,
if ya really want to get folks stired up with each other ask
