Jason's Slick 62 F250 Project

Post by jasonst »

1st of all, what a great web site. I look forward to reading and learning.

Where this is going to lead, I have no idea. I suppose my priority should be to get it running, but money is tight, so I'll need to buy a few parts truck, take the parts I need and sell the rest to fund this project.

I owned this truck about 9 years ago, sold it 8 years ago when I moved from AL to MO. I just found it again a couple weeks ago and hauled it from AL to MO just last week.

When I originally owned it I don't recall it being rusted at all and boy oh boy did it ever run well. Like a fine old tractor!

Information
1962 F250 Custom Cab
292 / 4-Speed
Dana 60 4.56 Limited Slip
Dealer Installed Power Brakes

Here are a few pictures...I'm certainly open to suggestions on what would be worthwhile fixes for this rig.

I used to go to Church Services with the fellow who purchased the truck from me. He said he drove the truck from my house to his and it had sat ever since.

Here's where it was sitting when I picked it up:

Loading it up:

Loading took me two hours!

I bought this truck and trailer just to go get my 62, so the truck is for sale if there's any interest.

Here's the side that was facing the pine tree:

Long Unis rule!
Welcome to Slick 60s.
How do you want to use the truck?
Daily Driver, Hot Rod, hauler?
We can help more if we know what you want from it.
Pretty easy to make her a F 100 too if you want.

sweet uni!!! Welcome to the club from West Virginia!! wave.gif I would start with getting it running and then a brake upgrade from single bowl to double bowl master. keep the power though... the truck appears to be pretty solid from the pics... glad you found your old truck....

I need to keep it a F250. I like that it's a bit different than most.

I'd like it to be a nice ole work truck. Solid, clean and dependable, but I'd like to keep it mostly stock, (looking). I'd like some real guts under the hood, but that's on down the road.

-Get it running, (been sitting 8 years outside...ideas before I begin??)

-Make it roadworthy and safe

-Clean up the interior

-Someone installed a box in the bed with access from the outside. I'll probably make a nice box in the bed and continue to use it that way rather than fool with fixing the bodywork

-Resolve rust issues, make it solid for the long term

-Original paint scheme, (it was Rangoon Red/Corinthian White)

-I'd like a receiver under it to pull my car trailer, but I'm not sure how this would do on the highway ie: 4.56 gears / 4 speed, (does anyone know the cruising speed on this truck?)

Those are my initial ideas.

Thanks fellas,
~Jason

I haven't really done anything with this truck, other than push it off the trailer and into the garage. I did try to unscrew the air cleaner wing nut with no luck. Last night I tried to push the accelerator pedal down, but it's frozen. The brake pedal goes straight to the floor.

I have a feeling "Clifford" and I are in for a fight!! 8)

Worked on the truck for a bit today

Post by jasonst »

This is me putting the truck into my huge garage the other day:
Image

I have a little room to get around the front of the truck, but that's it. This is me...nice to meet ya'll!
Image

-Hood removed
-Air cleaner removed
-Vacuumed all the dirt out as best I could
-Removed battery tray
-Removed spark plugs
-Poured ATF into cylinders
-Lubricated throttle linkage, carburetor & choke
-Turned motor over by hand a little

I noticed the spring is broken behind the main throttle linkage. Is there a trick to replacing this booger?
Image

Here are a few pictures of the engine bay in it's current state:
Image

Image

Here are my cab supports. The driver's side has a little rust that I'll clean up and coat with POR-15, but they shouldn't really need any work, but the floors will:

Well...hoped you all enjoyed that a little.

welcome.gif from NorCal, Jason! Me likes the F250s, too. Isn't it great to get back an old friend? I hope the rust isn't too bad, that would ruin it for me.

If you keep tall tires on it, a 4.56 rear gear would be fine, IMO. It will spin some rpm to be sure, but you wouldn't want to haul faster than 55-60 without some better-than-stock braking, I hope. Start with a dual piston master cylinder conversion. I am a twin-I-beam guy, so I don't know the particulars on that, but there is some great expertise on this site to help when you are ready.

I'm guessin you like sports cars (garage posters). What kind of car do you want to haul?

Where in Limestone county was that truck hiding?

Athens for the 1st two years, just North of town then it was towed up to his farm off Prospect Rd further North. We lived there for a few years and sure do miss Athens. What a wonderful place! We were just there last week!

I'd like to grab the truck, but it doesn't run at all. He thinks it jumped timing. I'd then have two project trucks!

Carburetor questions...

Is this sacriledge?

Post by jasonst »

I found this 66 F100 (6cyl, 3-spd) locally for about $2k. Supposedly it's an original 1 owner farm truck with 24k miles.

The white on the door is a magnetic farm sign:
Image

I need a nice hood, tailgate and driver's door...would I be able to re-coop that kind of money in parts? The owner says it's a very tight truck with a perfect interior.

The problem is, it's much nicer than mine, so why not use it and don't worry about fixing mine. Truth be told, my 62 250 would be a better parts truck. It's just that my 62 250 is "My Truck" and I want it back on the road again.

I need some honest advise!

I went down to the auto parts store and purchased the following:

-Plugs+
-Wires+
-Cap+
-Rotor Button+
-Points+
-Condenser+
-Fuel Filter+
-Oil+
-Oil Filter+
-Front & Rear Shoes+
-Front & Rear Wheel Cylinders+
-All the hardware for all the brakes+
-Battery+

Only to find out our checking account was in pretty sad shape, so I had to return it all! :( I probably should have checked that first!

the tailgate wont work on your truck-totally different style. while the doors will work, they are a different style as well. the hood will work fine. for the right parts, you will need to find another unibody.
the fenders will bring about 100$ a piece, a good windshield is about 50, the grille could bring 100 to 150 if it's pretty nice.
if the radiator support is nice it's worth about 250 to 500. the all the interior and exterior stainless is sellable and prices vary. this is about all i can think of right now.

Thank you for the information. Can you talk with your buddy and find out the story with his unibody?

Thanks again Chris,
