I found a neat knob insert at lowes, listed as nylon hole
plugs. They are made by Hillman, so am sure lots of stores
sell them. size is 9/16 part # 139460 black I painted mine
silver. trim off the snaps to hold in metal and a little glue.
the best part pack of 2 about $1

are you saying an insert as in the end of the knobs? OR an insert that goes in the "empty" holes in the dash.
sorry, I'm so slow.
but sounds like something I might be needing.

they replace the white part that detoriates and falls out.
there was some larger one in the drawer, but I didn't look
at them. At lowes they were in a drawer under screws.

Someone here used ball bearings epoxied in the empty holes. Looked really cool.
I'll bet colored marbles would work too.....

I used chrome plug buttons but I like the idea of the nylon.. Paitned would probably look better.. The chrome buttons are almost too "flashy"

The ones from Dennis are nice but at 6 time price and
I am cheap. I put these in my extended cab truck, they
also look almost fractory as does the truck

StrongerRatFink66 'Mike' used red marbles in his and looks pretty neat. He gets asked all the time if they light up.

I wanted to thank you for the lowes tip. I went looking for the plastic ones you mentioned but ended up getting some chrome ones they had.
I think they turned out well and fit in perfect... $1 a piece.
Kindly,
Danny

what size chrome was that, i was wondering if those would fit or if they would pop out. did you cut the tabs off the inside or just glue them?

Gregg,
I glued them in. However, they did stay in fine on their own. I just wanted to make sure they wouldn't ever fall out.
They're the 5/8'' size. Item number 139402.
Kindly,
Danny

One person used dimes matching the year of the truck. I thought that was pretty cool. Lots of inovative thinking going on here. Love this site!

This is my entry into the world of "what to do when the original knob inserts are gone". I built it up to look close to original, but made it glow in the dark with 12 hour strontium aluminate glow compound. I want to do all of the dash knobs like this. This is the lighter.
And this is what it looks like in the dark!

Now that's a great Idea Dan, better than just grabbing in the dark.

Sometimes you can get in trouble just grabbing in the dark.
