More work to do but the new trans is "nailed" to the bell... :rocker:

I took out a T-18 and installed a orion OD trans..

It looks nice. I am happy where the shifter "landed".. On the down side it looks like I'll need to build another trans crossmember..

BTW, I think T-18 means "two 18 year" old helpers to remove.. One 36 year old is not the same LOL.. My muscles will be hurting in the morning..

But, is the T-18 a good tranny?

Jake,
For a working truck - I think they are awesome!

...and about half way down this list is a description of the Borg Warner T-18 4speed transmission.

Some folks don't like them because of the low or "granny" 1st gear ratio, others don't like the fact that their 1st and Reverse gears are NOT synchronized (unable to shift in/out while rolling).

2ndly, because the T-18 4th gear is 1:1, it isn't very forgiving for fuel mileage when your Slick has a high-numerically / low ratio rear end gear set; such as 4.10 gears that came in many 3/4 ton Slicks. For that reason, many folks find it easier/cheaper to change out the transmission instead of the rear end gears.

No troubles so far.. Not on the road yet. I did fill it with gear oil and run it through the gears.. Nice and quiet.. I am not impressed with the shifter. Hopefully I can remedy that with some adjustments..

I just finally today talked to the driveline shop today.. I am going to have them retube a shaft I have. I do have one that is too long that would just need shortening but the joints are 1330's (the truck has 1310).. A new tube will be more $ but a much better job overall without oddball joints...

The driveline guys are near my work twice a week, hopefully a week from now I can try it out..

I got my new driveshaft today.. $160 for everything, tube, ends, u-joints, balance, and labor..

Almost too pretty to hide under the truck..

I was under the impression that is why we had kids so when we get older we can get them to do the heavy lifting that we did when we were that age.

Nice looking shaft Jason. Cool thing about having one made is they build it true so it doesn't need weights. Factory uses weights to fix their shoddy driveshaft work.

Looks like you got a great deal there Jason. Funny seeing this conversation about T-18's. I bought a 78' F-350 dually Reverse is over to right and up, My 78' 150 is over and down. I know my 150 has a T-18, the 350 is supposed to have the same thing, after investigating a little I found out theres 2 versions of the T-18 and the earlier version, reverse is over to the right and up.

Jason,

CONGRATULATIONS ON GETTING A SWEET DRIVESHAFT!

Are you going to give your new driveshaft a bright 'candy-cane' paint job or ?
