Power steering

Post by jefflovesf250s »

Does anyone have advice on the correct installation of a late 60's or early 70's style power steering cooler on a Bendix power steering system in a 65/66 Slick? Description would be great, pictures even better. I'm sure there is lots of experience out there. Thx.

I installed power steering to my 66 ranger. It is the bendix style, and the doner i got it from didnt have a cooler. Should it have one. Been running it this way for about 4 yrs now.

The 73-79's used the steel tubing ran back and forth in front of the crossmember to cool to power steering. Probably used 6' of 3/8" tube.
I plan to use one of those extruded aluminum (heat sink that the oil passes through) that the street rodders use. If you buy the 18" model advertised to rodders, it will cost about $89. If you shop where circle track racers buy, you can get a 48" unit for about $40. I plan to use a 18"section of it for my power steering and the rest for my transmission. Not sure where I am going to put the one for the steering, probably on the front of the engine crossmember. The transmission cooler will go on the outside of the passenger frame rail. I have seen these on dirt track racecars and they seem indestustruble.

Truckfarmer, that's news to me. Wonder if it's a regional thing...Sure wasn't one on the '78 I parted out. I never even Heard of a power steering cooler before Banjo mentioned one on here, a long time ago.
It's a race.. Will hell freeze over or will JC finish his truck first. Stay tuned..

Johnny Canuck: I'm new to this game but what I have gathered from the experience of various Slick owners who have discussed on this and other sites, that one of the main killers of the Bendix power steering set-up is heat. Presume that means that the fluid degenerates prematurely and/or gaskets & seals fail. It seemed to me that the simple solution would be a cooler, and Iceman's pics show what I have seen elsewhere, however not sure the cooling fin area and tube length will do much cooling. However, it will look more or less "correct" as my P/S setup and cooler are from a 1968 F100, which makes it pretty close to my 66F250.

Yep I realize they are a good idea, just never knew there were stock ones. Was definitely not one on my 78 with a Saginaw setup.

I've seen trucks with & without. Most of the ones with a cooler seem to be 3/4 ton (or larger), or trucks with a towing/camper special package. My '76 F250 Camper Special has the 6' flavor Truckfarmer describes. My pop-inlaw's old 76 F250 had one too.

I've seen some of the "mini radiator" types Ice showed, mounted on cars...usually larger cars like Crown Vics & Lincolns.
My "Slickitis" affliction began here...

the ones i posted are from 68s, found them in fordification gallery.
i have seen both kinds, the type i posted is usually found on late 60s f250s and camper specials as said.
if you were very concerned about the cooling , one of the later, larger ones would provide more.

I had a 79 F100 I parted a few years back, with out a p/s cooler. I thought about adding one. I am putting this setup on my 71 shortbed, so probably doesn't need it.

I guess I'll put in my pic as well. This was taken out of a '69 F-100 that I'll be putting in my '61. It shows the cooler mounted at a different angle than Ice's.
