Slick 60's

lots of questions about the differences in 61-66 cabs and sheet metal as to what fits what and the differences.
if you happen to find a cheap truck with a good cab or are planning a cab swap this will help to know if it will work.
i will start with the standard cabs f100-f600. the body code on the VIN tags for these is 81.
any 61-64 cabs will fit on any 61-64 frame.
any 65-66 cabs with stepwells will also fit on any 61-64 frames,and any 61-64 cabs with stepwells will fit on 65-66 frames that have cabs with stepwells.
those frames are 65 f100 4x4, 65-66 f250 4x4, f350,f500 and f600.

however that is only mounting and does not take into account the following differences which are year and type specific.
they are:

the 61 and 62 cabs have a different stepwell bottom,and the ribs are longer than the 63-up.same thing with the outboard indentations on the cab rear.61 and 62 are shorter.
63 and up have drain holes at the lower front door jamb.
64 and up have a higher roof.
65-66 have different vents on the kickpanels
all 4x4 and F350,500,and 600 have a hole and cover on the passenger floor for the battery, except the 66 f100 4x4.it uses a 65-66 2wd cab.
f350,f500 and f600 cabs have a different pedal bracket and different holes for the master cylinder.the f100/250 2wd and f250 4x4 brackets can be made to work with these cabs as well as the master cylinders with some slight modifications.if you plan on keeping the single bowl master cylinder it does not matter, you can just get a brake line adaptor and hook up the brake line.

65/66 f100 and f250 2wd and 66 f100 4x4 cabs will only fit on 65/66 f100/ f250 2wd and 66 f100 4x4 frames.

long wheelbase integral (unibody) cabs\beds will fit on any 61-63 lwb 2wd frame and any 61-66 f250 4x4 frame.you will need to add spacers to some of the wood blocks on the bottom of the bed for the 4x4 frame as the frame is flat with no rise over the rear axle.The code for these cabs is 66.

short unis will fit on any shortbed frame

it has been proven that separate uni beds can be done as well as to graft the uni bed onto a standard cab truck

the 65-66 f100/250 2wd and 66 f100 4x4 cab will also bolt up to any f100/250/350 2wd or 4x4 frame from 67-79.

the above is meant as a guide if you happen to be needing a cab and do not wish to do much extra work, anything can be made to fit with modifications of frame and cab mounts if you have the time and tools.

don't know if it helps, but my 61's have a short smooth roll, windshield to roof line.. later models have a sharp ridge line

please read thru the article again and you will see that is covered.

if you stick a 66 f100 on a 79 frame do you have 2 do a body lift?i once was told they would mount up but the 79 has c curve up behind the cab and the bed would set 2 high.just wanted 2 see 4 sure before i throw away a good frame

lots of folks have put 65/66 f100s on 73-79 frames.79 frame is wider in the back and the wheelbase is a few inches more but otherwise usable.

do the 64 F350 cabs have the same front cab mounts as the 65-66 f100? or arethey different. i am needing some cab moutns and know of a good 64 cab to cut up to harvest those mounts. if they are the same.

I am going to put the 62 short uni on my 79 frame and wondered what I am going to run into. I know I am going to have to shorten the frame, not a problem just anything you can think of off the top of your head I might run into. The 79 is a long bed F150. All the running gear has been rebuilt so that is the reason I am going to use it. I know it will make it to slick stock too with this running gear under it

think you will need to take the front cab mounts off the frame and use on the 79.
also will be some firewall/column issues, nothing you cant get around but will take some time and fabricating.

I was pretty sure the front cab mounts might be an issue. I hadn't thought of using the mounts from the 62 frame. Good point.
The steering I will probably use from the 79 and reposition it to fit and I think I will use the pedal mount from the 79 also because the 79 is an automatic. I'm going to try and use the 62 steering wheel too. Another thought is to adapt the seat belt assembly from the 79. Any thoughts there???. The fuel tank on the 79 will stay I think, altho I have a rear tank from another 70's truck I will use if I can't use the side tank.
Trying to get as much of this project thought out in advance as I can. Your thoughts and opinions are much appreciated.
The fabrication part is the easy part once I know what direction to take. When I start the project it will be very well documented to share with all.
I am hoping to do all of this with the parts and materials I have on hand with very little of it having to be purchased.

Do the 1964 or 1965 F350 cabs have the same front body mounts as the F100's.

Do the 1964 or 1965 F350 cabs have the same front body mounts as the F100's.

They are different. The 350 would have a "crossmember" style front cab mount where the 65/66 f100 has the "tub" style.. Like the bumps.

ok thank you. i wouldn't be able to do what i was thinking then. too bad too the two cabs i know of are in pretty good shape.

a few things i would do different next time, one would be grafting the 65/66 lower dash section in instead of cutting into the early style.

Thanks for the pictures. What I saw was about what I expected. I like your idea about grafting in a lower dash segment. I think I will be looking for a 65/66 cab and get all the steering pieces and lower dash. This will be an automatic trans so hopefully I can find all the pieces from an automatic truck. Maybe the 79 stuff will work but just in case I'll locate all the other stuff. I will begin to shorten the 79 frame in a few weeks and start the document process. I am beginning to really look forward to this swap and bring it to Slick Stock next year. That is my goal.
The trans will be shifted using a Locar tranny mounted shifter. We used one on the 61 in my signature and it worked great plus it looks really cool.

Iceman, in the first section of this thread you stated that 64 and up have a higher roof, Is the glass in these the same? or are the windshield post shorter? Thanks, Red

The top of the roof has a bigger dome to it. It not a big difference you have to look to see it.
