Truckrat's Flatbed

Post by Truckrat »

I've been gathering pieces and parts for this project for a while now, so here goes. Got this frame from a 74 Ford F100 longbed truck. Already has power steering and power disc brakes and a rear mounted gas tank. Saves me a lot of time not having to change all that stuff over. Price was right since I got it for a few bucks for gas from a buddy. Still have the cab and frontend off it if anyone out there needs them for another truck.

This cab is in pretty good shape. Does need some floor repair
but nothing big. Worst part is the back left corner. The bed that
was on the truck it came off of hit it a bit. We're going to straighten
that out and weld up the gas filler hole. Got some repairs to do on
the lower cab corners, too.

That's the plan Alan. Couldn't stand not having a truck to drive to SS5.
Might not be real pretty to look at, but hope to be driving it way before then. TR

Another pic of the cab from the side. The day I took this I was hauling it over to my friend Ben's house.

This place by the fuel hole and the cab corners will be easy fixes. Can't wait to get these done and get the sanding, priming and some paint on this.

Another pic of the frame after I got the old cab and frontend off.
Pulled the engine after the sheetmetal was all out of the way.
Lots easier that way. Anyone know why the power steering line has all of
the extra back and forth bends in it?
I was thinking about adding a small cooler much like a trans cooler to the line to eliminate this.
Seems to me it would clean up the engine bay . Any thoughts? TR

My bet is that bent line IS the COOLER for it in this case. Interested to see how that gas tank works for you. So what year frame are you putting it in?

The line is a built in cooler. One less rubber hose to leak.

This is the only 73-79 chassis I had ever owned, so wasn't sure. Guess I'll keep it intact. Probably will replace the pump, tho. I hooked this one (red pump in pic) up temporarily to use to move the truck around when I got it running. All that is coming off for cleaning and painting soon. The light blue cab in the background is the one that came off this frame. It is a good cab if anyone is looking for one to replace a rusty one on a daily driver they might have. TR

Maybe mine will be the first. Not sure if anyone came to the first two SS with one, but haven't been any at the two I've been to. Makes a good place to sit if there are no chairs around. TR
