Havent had alot of time to work on the truck lately. I did get a little time though so thought I would get back to a project I started a number of months ago. Convert an oilbath air cleaner over to a paper filter and lift it an inch to clear a holley 2v carb.

First I found a furncace duct reducer at Home Depot that would fit the air cleaner carb opening with close tolarance. I welded it in and now just needs to be cut off at the first flange down in the reducer it even comes with a prestamped bend to sit flush on the carb.

Just what the duct looks like welded into place in the opening of the air cleaner.

1 1/2" holes will be cut around the outside of the inner part of the housing to increase airflow to the carb. This housing just seems very air restrictive to me so I will improve that situation.

I will weld a flat round 18 gage piece into the top of the air cleaner to keep air from going around the paper filter and it will help the top of the air cleaner sit flush to the top of the air filter. It will be welded to the stamped ridge that is at the bottom ot the inside edge and is above the stamped ridges made by the factory.

I still havent figured out what to do about the outside cover. Either leave it as is or open it up somehow. I thought maybe try and find someone that does louvering locally but I am figuring that would probably be cost prohibitive. Im open to any suggestions on what to do with this part of the conversion.

The new 20 gage top welded into the aircleaner cover so it can sit flush ontop of a paper air filter.

Image

The aircleaner base with the furnace duct reducer cut off so it can sit on the holley carb. I should now be able to use the oilbath aircleaner housing on a holley 4 barrel when I convert over to one.

Both halves sitting on the carb just like they belong there. No filter inside yet I have to check with my local parts house and see what they can come up with that will fit.

I started cutting 1 1/2 inch holes around the outside of the inner housing for better air flow but my drill batteries where all dead from lack of use lately. Ill post up how that comes out once I get the batteries all charged and the new air filter in place.

A little more done on this 4x4 too. Wheels have been blasted and powder coated. Two hubcaps found at the Portland swap meet for $2 a piece.

Sanded down the old paint on the old oilbath now paper air filter housing and got some rattle can paint on them. Just have to order up the 352 V8 sticker and some fender trim plastic inserts for 4 wheel drive. Going with some tires that are radial yet still look like the old bias ply tires if I can find some.

Gregg I only need the two that I have. They are going on an F100 4x4 so only need the two. I have two other caps that I may try to mod to go over the front hubs. These are 16" wheels but are still the 5 lug type so standard hub caps work. Im going to take one of those hub caps that I have that are in tuff shape and try and fab up something Ford maybe could have done. Something like the two letters I cut out for the hub to come thru the cap. Weld them into the sides of a hub cover that goes from the cap to the locking hub. Just thinking about it right now though. Thanks for your concern but Im doing ok on the hubcap front. Thanks for the comp on the wheels Im trying to keep the truck as stock looking as I can. Im trying to get it ready for its first car show the middle of next month. Right now its nowhere near a complete resto but as few of these that were made I figure Id throw it out there for people to take a look at and see how primitive the early 4wd was and how simple too.

At the exhaust artists shop. Went with a 2 into 1 in a 1 1/2 pipe. Im trying to keep it as stock looking as possible but still sound like it has some guts. Flowmaster muffler.

Dave the exhaust artist used his torch and moved the header collector that was close to the drive shaft to at least an a few inches away. What a ride 5 miles to his shop with uncapped headers on an FE.

First long road trip for the 65 and first car show for the 65. It was in Sandpoint Idaho about 65 miles from my house. It was registered in the under construction class. Just brought it up for some fun and a nice drive. I got to share some street space with 2 nice convertables. Drop top Caddy and a Drop top Tempest. The Pontiac was motivated by a 455 with trips for carboration. I think my 65 made those 2 cars look really sharp. There was alot of interest in the truck and some people didnt even know Ford had made a 4wd back in the 50s and 60s. Even had some wifes take hope that there is a truck under that project their husbands had started after they saw the pics of how this truck looked when it hit my driveway.

A few shots of the the truck going and comming on its 130 mile round trip. Maintained 60 mph with no problems. Id pretty much trust it to go just about anywhere now.

LT235/85R16 with a ply rate of E. The wheels are a 5 wide in the front and a 5 1/2 in the rear. It took a while to come up with the wheels but I finally did quite by accident. There is a spare tire lock cabled in the bed. I have a spare tire holder that is homemade to mount the spare in the bed behind the driver I have to clean it up and derust it but Im still hoping to find the factory option spare tire mount for inside the bed before that. Thats another pretty hard to come up with option just not alot of them out there.

I was pretty excited to get it on the road and try a good long roadtrip. I was aprehensive goin out the 65 miles but no worries on the return trip it did just fine. Feel like I could drive it all day at 60 mph plus and have no problems. I didnt check the milage but I guess it was between 12 and 15 mpg at least as I didnt even use 1/2 tank to make the drive and it was slow going getting out of town after the car show with alot of cars headed home.

Sometime this summer I have a couple of other doors to put on it that are in better shape. I will be welding up all the chrome trim holes and other holes put in in by PO. I have to change the TC rubber mount bushings they are all worn out. I have to start making some time to get going on the 63 again so the 65 will not get alot of work done on it for a while. I only have room for 1 disassembled truck in the garage at one time.

You've done a good job with that project!
I like that you displayed the progress photos that way at the show, funny how most people have no idea what it take to accomplish what you and others take on. hats off!

Thanks for the comp. Yes alot of surprised looks. You see alot of complete vehicels but you dont know how they got that way. Some people have photo albums with pictures in them and that is always neat to look thru. But with a few hundred cars and trucks to see you dont always have enough time to flip thru the photo albums. I have to give my wife the credit for the big pics though she came up with the idea. I was a little nervous about putting this truck in a big show like that but after all the positive feedback Im glad I did. Most surprising was the number of women either wives or girlfriends who took hope that what their significant other was working on will one day be complete and running car or truck.

if you're interested in factory correct so far best i've come up with is i'll pbly need to have the local upholstery shop make some up from correct mtl from smsfabric. hopefully there are factory seat covers out there somewhere. if you're not concerned with correct mtls i'd bet you can come up with something that looks good fairly easily.

if you could keep me posted that would be appreciated.
