Chris W. 3-point seat belts

Post by Uncle Skip »

Chris.
These are 3-point GM retractors that I used in Nadine. Are these the same ones you used? I've been really happy with the fit and finish of these units.

Skip, are those from a 88-90 something GM truck? I don't know when the body style changed, about 99 or 2000?

Nice truck BTW.

They look the same I think mine are from an older year model. I like yours with the easer push in buttons. I need to add some length to mine because there a little short on the button side. I need to look for some red ones now that my seat is a lot better. Here some pics.

What size and type fastener holds those seatbelts down? I assume it's some sort of star type fastener. Any idea what size bit?

I just used a grade 8 bolt for mine. I think it was a half inch bolt then a lock washer and nut. I used the biggest size that would fit the hole. I will try and look again this weekend.

I'm wondering what I need to take to the junkyard to get them out of the donor truck. Seems like they have a special head on them.

The kit that I used has a huge (2" diameter) heavy washer to back the bolt through the floor. I did not use the original holes as I recall, as they were not in a location that I could get the retractor to sit nice.

As far as the upper pillar points (behind your head) the approach that I took was to weld a nut on a approx 8" piece of flat steel, about 1.5" wide, 3/16 or 1/4" stock.

Drill the hole in the strap iron with a bit, put a nut on a bolt, then bolt through hole, then a second nut, and tighten. Now weld one nut solid in place. That insures that the nut will be square to the strap iron and also that the threads will be good. Then remove the bolt and second nut, obviously.

Now you'll have to remove the upper headliner, drill a hole into the inner pillar stiffener where you want the pivot point. Carefull not to go through (bit stop is wise) so far as to hit the outside metal of the cab (ask me how I know). Then you can hold the nut/strap down from above and get the bolt to the pivot started.

The piece of strap will yank the whole inner stiffener apart before it fails. And if you hit something that hard, well the seat belt will have cut you apart anyhow, so what happens to the truck will be secondary........
