1966 4x4 exhaust help

Post by Zenkiller »

I'm brand new to the site. Need help on a few things. I've owned my 1966 f-100 4x4 custom cab for about 10 years. I'm swapping engine. Going to a 390 with a c-6 auto and new process 205. Any advice on the best exhaust would be great. I've found headers on summit for 4x4 but they say they won't work on floor shift automatics. Can I still buy these and just have someone modify exhaust down wind. Also have stock cast iron manifolds, but can't find dual exhaust system for 4x4. Any Help appreciated.

First off, welcome aboard! welcome.gif Any pics of your truck? :D

I haven't personally put headers on a 4x4 truck like yours, but I can't imagine it would be very hard to find a set to fit. If you ordered a set for say a '75 F100 4x4 390 automatic, they should bolt right up to your truck.
Regarding making the exhaust fit stock manifolds (or headers, for that matter), I'd just drive it down to a decent muffler shop & have 'em whip up a system for it...as opposed to finding a system in a catalog. :D
I've always had a good shop do mine & have rarely had a problem.
My "Slickitis" affliction began here...

I have a 66 F-100 4x4 with a 390 and headers, but I still use the 4sp. I don't that you should have a problem with putting on the headers. Are you using a cable shifter? I think that would help. And as Slick Fan said take it to a good shop for the exaust hook up, with mine the headers point right at the trans crossmemberand had to be bent at almost 90* up and over it.
