In answer to your question about the wheel covers, the Steering knuckle "U" joints are directly behind those covers. I don't remember the name of the manufacturer of that particular front drive axle as they were not that popular out in the Civilian world and I have only had to do with one in all the years I worked on heavy duty rigs. They were a very high maintenance unit compared to the other units available at that time.
