how to decipher what wires go to what on a turn sig switch

Post by bobenhotep »

there are 6 wires normally on a turn signal switch. you will need a multimeter and some way of marking the wires. I will use 3 different colors of tape for the example, but you could number them also.

with the switch in the center position, check for continuity between the different wires on the switch. 3 of the wires should have continuity between them. mark them with red tape.

now turn the signal to the right. one of the 3 wires above will stop having continuity with the other 2. put a green piece of tape on it, next to the red. If you check the green and red wire you just marked, it will have continuity with 2 other wires. mark them green.

so now you have 2 red wires, 2 green wires, and a green and red wire.

turn the signal to the left.

put a piece of yellow tape on the wire that has no tape on it yet. it will have continuity if you test between it and one of the red wires. put a yellow piece of tape on that red wire. it will also have continuity to one of the green ones. put a yellow piece on it.

now, deciphering time.

red=from brake light switch
red/green=right brake/turn
red/yellow=left brake/turn
yellow=left turn front
green=right turn front
yellow/green= in from turn signal flasher

This was great for me. Thanks Dan. After hooking it up this way, I still didn't have what I was wanting. So, I called dan and he said to check a couple other things. Found my issue, and now we have turn signals and brake lights.
