Anyone find paint that will stay on headers?

Anyone find paint that will stay on headers?

Post by BigMike »

I bought some of this today but I'm skeptical. I was also thinking of using header wrap just so I don't have to look at the rust when everything else will be looking so good.

I just saw a couple of YouTubes on this and it sounds like it will work. I have to find the High Heat Primer. Getting the rust off of the headers is going to a b!itch.

Ceramic coating looks great and functions great. Worth every penny. Unfortunately, it normaly costs as much or more than the headers themselves

my 2 cents on header wrap... it holds in moisture and will rust out a set of headers right quick.... just ask my neighbor.

I used that on my headers. word good for a few months. then the water and road crap got on them and it started to peal/burn off. just on the bottom. the top still looks good.

Try John Deere muffler black. I don't know how the new stuff is. I've used it a number of years ago & it held up well.

I have successfully used a product called "stove black", a paint? which is a high temp black coating for woodstoves.

It seems to last longer than anything else i have tried.

I agree. I had wrap on a set of pipes on my Harley that were installed correctly per the manufacturer. Worked great for a while, but I ride no matter what the weather. During the summer I found that both pipes coming out of the heads split uniformly in the same area. Unwrapped them and also found rust spots and more cracks on both. The part of the header that is most susceptible to rust and cracking from moisture would be the first foot or so coming off the head.

I read a lot of debates on wrap and most agreed that they hold moisture even when you install them and seal them correctly. Long story short from my research on header material was that ceramic coating was the best route. Other than regular spray coating and replacing pipes every few years. I have a set of rusty headers on my Y Block and am dreading the cost of replacement. That's my 2 cents worth of experience anyway.

I get mine done here and they always come out very nice. They are good people to deal with and are not too far of a drive for you.

Just one of the many options and if your planning to keep the truck and are looking for longevity of the finish ceramic is the best way to go. Educate me if there is a more durable option.

Nitro-Plate is the BEST way to go. Get ready to spend, though!
