Windshield Wiper Motor

Post by Blackwaterforge »

What year windshield wiper motors will fit a 66?
Mine is hesitating mid swipe.
I suspect it is the plastic gear in the motor.
Are these still available from Ford?
Thank You!
If it cain't be fixed with a sledge hammer it must be an electrical problem!

I would suggest you at this time do the wiper delay upgrade. It is simple and easy, and involves only a very little bit more work than what you are proposing.
You will need the switch, wiring harnesses and motor from a '73 - '79 F100/F-250 truck. I understand some earlier and some later models will work, but I know for a fact these will.
1. Harvest the switch, harnesses with plugs and wiper motor. You should need to cut only 1, and possibly 2 wires.
2. The switch will have 2 plugs. One is a 2-wire plug for the squirts. The black with purple stripe (if I recall correctly) may have to be cut as it goes through the firewall.
3. The second plug is a larger one for running the wiper and delay. This plug is part of the harness running to the delay module and the motor, and shouldn't require any wires to be cut. It is possible one wire from the ignition switch (for power to the wipers) and a ground may need cutting, but not into the wiper harness itself.
4. From your '66, remove the wiper motor and mount plate along with the wiper switch and wiring harness.
5. On the later motor, remove the bellcrank and replace it with the '66 bellcrank.
6. Reinstall the motor, mount plate and everything.
7. Hook up the power and the squirts switch.
8. The stem on the later switch is longer, and will require trimming about 1/2" to make it look right, but you will need to cut out a slot for the spring loaded retainer to catch. This is a cosmetic fix only.
Hope this helps!

Thanks Banjo
I already have the later model switch with the delay box hooked up to my old motor.
I will get a motor for a 79 and install with the 66 bell crank and bracket.
Does anyone have experience with motors from advance auto?

Will that setup work with a 64 slick?

They just don't make them like they used to.

I know the bracket for the wiper motor is the same for 61-64, and I just made the swap myself. I used a rebuilt Cardone 40-258 from Auto Zone which fits many Ford trucks from as early as 1966 to 1979, and picked up a used switch w/delay with wiring for cheap. I used the following wiring description from fellow member Dion (qwertyd10n):

Wiper Motor > Delay Governor Harness
Black > Black/pink
Red > Red
Blue > Blue/orange
White > White

Power to the black/green coming from the harness.
Black/white from the harness would be for the washers.

Hope this helps.
