Tilt column from 79 fit 66?

Post by Kellxr7 »

I tried the search and I 'think' I got my answer but still not confident, gotta ask to make sure, I am getting my 79 donor truck for my 66 & it has a tilt column, just want to make sure is this a fairly straight forward swap for my '66 non tilt? (both trucks power steering, both trucks automatics)

Bolt in swap with very minor changes. You have to be using a saginaw style power steering box. The trans neutral switch is on the trans on a 78/9 so you won't have one on the column. You can add one to the column pretty easily as I noted in a thread on Keiths forum and somebody detailed after following my directions (http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =6&t=37294). For a 65/66 swap you will need to remove the column bracket from your 65/6 column and reuse it with the 78/9 column after you remove the original bracket from that one as well. The horn will have one extra wire which you simply attach to ground. You have to use a 70 and newer car or 78 and newer (up to about 85) truck steering wheel as they have two contacts for the horn and are larger in diameter were the wheel meets the column (it does not matter if you use a car or 80 and newer truck/van wheel for a locking column which has detents in the backside, they are the same as a truck wheel except they leave that off on the 78/9 truck wheel, it does not hurt anything to have it there. And finally the later column has an emergency flasher system built into the turn signal switch and too hook it up all you need is a wire to a constant on power supply and a flasher cannister. Hawkrod
