what Oil pan should I use?

Post by *1bad66* »

Ok, I finally pulled the engine out of the 66 and found that my oil pressure problem was just the pickup tube clogged with dog hair. So that was a relief. Now that I got it out I want to change oil pans because it is hard to change the oil with the stock ltd front sump pan that was on the 351w originally. I would like to put a pan off a early 70s f-100 with a 302. Thanks

I had a similar question about a year ago in regards to the oil pan for a 351W and advantages/disadvantages towards front sump, rear sump, front/rear sump...? Only answer I got was they changed them depending on what vehicle it was in and where the crossmember divided the oilpan.

If it will clear the crossmember, a rear slump pan from a 4x4 would be the way to go. But you need the oil pump pick-up and the main bearing cap bolt that holds the pick-up in place.

At first the dog hair was kind of a relief because I was expecting worse but then I thought about it and I wanted to kill the damn dog but then again it wasnt her fault I left the engine exposed in the garage. For the pan I think I am going to go to the local core supply and buy a pan for a early 70s f-100 with a 302 and if it fits Im gonna by a new pickup tube for it. I guess just trial and error.

Check a 351 pan vs the 302. the pan oil seal is larger on a 351.

Use a pan and pickup from any 351 W equipped F150 F250 1980 to 96

It will have rear sump and a rear pickup tube. Plus take the oil dip stick as it will no longer be in front.

The rear sump pan is only a convienince to allow oil changes with out drooling oil all over the ford crossmember with a front sump pan.

Garbz is right. a 351w pan will NOT fit a 302 and vice versa. the diameter of the front and rear main bearing caps is different.

Never mind how I know this.Image

Garbz and JC, I can relate to the Don't ask me how I know that will not work answer. One of the great things about this group is no matter what mistakes someone has made someone else has made the same mistake and can help them out, like forgeting that stupid thin plate between the block and bell housing that I forgot to put in and had to pull the whole works back out on my 65 ( thanks Garbz for walkng me through that one as to where the noise was coming from ). I was not a happy camper when I had to pull the trans/bell housing/ clutch/ flywheel back out to put that plate back in and all my brother could do is laugh till I told him he had to help..................Kid

This reminds me of my current problem:

I'm sticking a 300 in my 66 to replace a bad 300. They both have the sump in the middle, which is exactly on top of the crossmember. not a problem clearing the crossmember, but its going to be hard to change the oil. I have a pan from a newer 300, with the sump in the rear.

Can I just swap pans? or is the pickup for the oilpump in the center? I dont want to drop the pan to check unless I have to, as the engine is already have in the truck.
