Turn signal switch & hood hinges

Post by bmcgc »

My turn signals do not self cancel. Its annoying.

I have never gone into a steering column, so I have no idea how difficult this task is.

What parts do I need and is this something that I will be able to figure out as I go along?

LMC has hood hinges for about $60 ea. Is that my best bet or should I look around for a set of oem hinges. Im thinking that all the oem hinges are 46+ years old and they may be good for a day or for years, its a roll of the dice.

I wouldn't go with hood hinges from LMC. I just don't care for LMC. There are a bunch of us on this site (me included) who have spare hood hinges we would part with cheaper than that. Guess it just depends on if you want new or used. But I would go used from a trusted member before I went with LMC. Like I said, I just don't care for LMC.

Its called a turn signal cam, you can pick it up in the "help" section of your local parts house. Its relatively easy to replace... the hardest part is pulling the steering wheel.

I would stay away from anything by LMC.

Pulling a steering wheel without a puller:

Have a friend pull on the steering wheel and hit the steering shaft with a hammer. SENSIBLY!!!
To avoid mushrooming the top of the shaft leave the nut in place flush with the end of the shaft.
Its hard to do this alone as you can only pull on one side of the wheel....

I happen to have a wheel puller. I dont remember where I got it or when, but its in the tool box.

What is involved in this?

Whats wrong with the LMC hood hinges? Are Dennis Carpenter hinges the same or different.

I only want to replace them once.

Check Obsolete's prices. They are the ones that had them made - LMC just resells them.
I bought a pair, and they look good, but haven't installed them yet. I have been told their springs are weak, so I have saved my old hinges in case I need the old springs.

The new hinges are great. The springs are the weak link.Put my old springs on the new hinges and all is good.

Found a couple youtube videos on the turn signal switch replacement. Surprisingly it looks pretty easy. Im going to order a complete switch assembly and give it a go.

Bmcgc, the key to making the turn cancel work right is to make sure you have the wheel aligned properly when re-installing and the wheels are straight ahead. Otherwise it will not cancel or cancel too quickly.

the wheel on my 61 uni came off just by taking the nut off and lifting up...Im thinking something else is wrong on down the line...made it real simple though.

I also have been debateing on getting the hinges from lmc. Im a newbee at this and i dont have a ton of money, so lmc i found is the cheapest and cheapest for a reason. I have not been impressed by the quality of the parts.

I do need a R/H hood hinge if anyone wants to sell me one? please send me a message if you want to part with one or both.
Ive tried the quick hood fix and it just made it worse. oh well!

Thanks all!!!!

I believe yours is a 4wd 63. Yes they should self cancel. You will need to remove your steering wheel like what is mentioned in the above posts. Check to see that the canceling cam on the bottom of the steering wheel is still there or that your switch canceling arms are still there and not broken off. Good luck with it. Of note the switches for the columns in that truck are not the same as the 2wd column. May be hard to find and pricy when you do.

Edit..... Check with Iceman at his store phone #. I got a good use one from him. He may have more to sell if you need one. Possibly Tom at flashback f100s.

I agree, Iceman or tom at flashback f100 is the way to go
Check what type you have before ordering. I believe all our slicks are self canceling

If you have an automatic transmission...Take precautions that the shift tube does not move up and dislodge the neutral start/ backup light switch actuating arm. The tube is under spring pressure at the bottom and when you pull the steering wheel the spring pushes the shift tube up. May want to remove the switch arm first and keep from fishing it out of the column later.

I pulled my wheel and the column did pop up and my neutral safety swicth did break right off. So dont let that happen because im finding it to be real hard to re[lace that little lever. I also noticed that between all the different catalogues out there the turn signal cams are all a little different. so keep that in mind.

I wrote a how-to on doing the turn signal switch replacement for '65-66 trucks (the earlier ones use a different switch arrangement, apparently): http://mongrelmotorsports.homestead.com ... witch.html I tried doing just the cam replacement and that only lasted a year or two. They are not made quite the same as the original and the wires on mine got chafed, plus they are a bear to install. Replacing with a correct Ford switch assy was not much more work and is a far better repair.
