I could use some help.
I have searched this forum and other forums on this subject.
I have found a lot of info on this here and there.
This relates to the 1966, 240, 6 cylinders, the carbs with the Spark Control Valve and the Load-o-matic distributors.
My understanding these Load-o-matic distributors will not work with a carb that does not have the SCV.
I have a 66, 240 with the Load-o-matic distributor but there is NO SCV on the carb. It was this way when I bought the truck.
The truck starts and runs very good.
Should I expect any problems?

Re: I could use some help.
Another reason I am asking is because
My son also has a '66 truck, with a 240 and a Load-o-matic distributor. But he has the carb with the SCV on it.
I have not been able to get it to run properly.
It will start and idle just fine, It will also accelerate from an idle okay.
But from a cruising speed, it stumbles when I accelerate.
I have cleaned, kitted and adjusted the carb but cannot get the stumbling to stop.
I finally put my carb on his engine and all the problems go away.
I am thinking about finding a carb without the SCV for his truck.

a clifford solves those issues
but there are some members called "the international carb rebuilding team" one of them will be along to check in and help

Re: I could use some help.
Thanks guys.
I've been trying to educate myself on these.
They seem simple enough.

BUT, The International Carb Rebuilding Team can only work along side the Interstate on a ramp with cars and Semis wizzing past at 70 mph just inches away from our work area.

Re: I could use some help.
i don't think the scv has anything to do with the vacuum advance. it comes from a port in the venturi of the carb. i am probably wrong, so here's a good page to read. maybe it can help.

Re: I could use some help.
Thinking about updating the distributor and carb.
I was wondering if a distributor and carb, from a '79 300 engine, would fit in the '66 240.
Has anyone tried this swap?
Anyone have any other recommendations?
thanks

Re: I could use some help.
they will fit, that is bolt up.
the distributor will be of the duraspark type and require some wiring mods, not difficult.
not sure what carb was being used on the 79 300
clifford intake with 2v carb and headers is the best way to get more out of a 240/300

Re: I could use some help.
The SCV does provide manifold vacuum from under the throttle plates and also a port above the plates it provides carb vacuum. There is a check valve/ball internal to the carb that moves to provide the appropriate source of vacuum to the distributor. It is a delta vacuum though and is only a couple of psi compared to 19 psi or so manifold total vacuum. A carb needs to have a SCV to be properly matched to a Loadmatic distributor. It could be the carb that is working pretty well could be providing about the right amount of vacuum through the carb port. I suspect it would run better with a matched carb to the distributor to get the advance working properly.

That is what is puzzling.Astrowing wrote:The SCV does provide manifold vacuum from under the throttle plates and also a port above the plates it provides carb vacuum. My sons truck has the proper carb with the SCV, matched to the load-o-matic distributor and runs poorly. very poorly.
My trucks carb, has apparently been changed. It does not have the the SCV but does have the load-o-matic distributor and as far as I can tell, it runs well for an old truck.
Installed my carb on my sons truck, it runs really well also.

I think I can get the wiring figured out without too much trouble.
I wasn't sure if the distributor would have the 5/16 drive or not, also was concerned about the gear and the shaft length.
As far as the carb, I think they still used a 1v. As of now I am not looking to upgrade the intake/exhaust. Kinda wanting to keep a low budget for this one. Too many other projects eating up money at the moment.

The distributor is an exact drop-in as far as the bottom of it is concerned.
The carb will fit, I did have to oval the holes as the new carb had a wider bolt pattern.
I have not finished wiring it up yet, though it looks to be simple to wire it.
I should have that done tomorrow.
