Rustoleum Roller Paint Job
Rustoleum Roller Paint Job
Has anyone painted their truck (or car) with a roller brush before? I'm not talking about for rustproofing or maintainence, but a cheap way to get a quality paint job. Hot Rod had an article about in one of their recent magazines and I wondered what some of you guys think. You use a lot of thinner and sand between coatc, etc...

I saw that article it was all over the internet about the dude in Nova scotia. He had a General Lee as I recall and painted it with Tremclad, which is a Canadian brand of Rustoleum. Turned out excellent and cost him $50, but a heap of man hours. He had a VW bug he did too. I'd say worth a try if you are into sanding your car a half dozen times.

It's a race.. Will hell freeze over or will JC finish his truck first. Stay tuned..
I am trying this on the bed of my truck now. I have 4 coats of paint on so far and it looks like it will need another 2 to 3 coats before I will be able to buff it out. It is a lot of work, but I have more time (not really) than money
Like everybody else I am a frugal Ford truck owner
Today somebody asked me where I sprayed the bed and then he gave me the funniest look when I told him I used a roller.
I will try to take some pic's tomorrow for all to see the progress.
My truck is a driver, I just want it to look fairly good and be all one color!
Have Fun!

If you're going to go the inexpensive route, just get a HVLP gun at Harbor Freight or off of eBay and spray like the pros (almost like the pros). May not be the best spraying gun, but would sure beat a roller anyday and you can use proper paint.

Max I think you missed the point completely.
the idea was to AVoID using $200 a quart "proper paint"
also, avoid buying a $2000 100 gallon compressor, and setting up a paint booth and fan etc, buying an expensive (more expensive than his paint job) gun, and all the exhaust and mask things , etc that go with a paint job.
this way, he lays out a fender on a sawhorse and paints it with a roller. when it's dry, he sands it finer each time and lays down another coat. $50 was his total cost with paint and roller for his paint job. This was the result

I used to keep my 62 in Krylon. It only lasts about 2 years, but looked good.

Harbor Freight also has 2 HVLP setups that has it's own pump (unless that's what Max was talking about). I actually thought of buying the better one, costs about $65. I suppose you could just blow the Rustoleum through it too. Guess I am lucky, I know a guy here in town that rents out his spray booth, bout a mile from here. That Charger looks nice though, I always liked them with a stance like that. I have a Harbor Freight HVLP gravity feed gun, it's actually not bad, less than $20 with a coupon. They also have better ones at decent prices, I bought this one to blow primer.Max wrote:If you're going to go the inexpensive route, just get a HVLP gun at Harbor Freight or off of eBay and spray like the pros (almost like the pros). I am struggling with the decision of painting my BMW race car right now. There are several options:
1) the Rust Oleum roller method. Costs under $100, but it's lots and lots and lots of sanding. Not sure I want to save money that badly.
2) Paint it myself the traditional way. I can buy paint supplies online to do the job for probably $200. I own a HF HVLP gun that produces good results and an air compressor. I would have to build a "paint booth" and buy a protective outfit, and it will undoubtedly make a hellish mess of my garage. I figure my total cost this way is closer to $300 and still a decent amount of work.
3) Give it to Maaco. For $500, it gets a single stage paint job in any color I want, and all I have to do is drop it off and pick it up. The most expensive proposition that my bank account won't appreciate, but it's got a lot going for it.
Beyond these choices the cost is simply prohibitive for a car that will be used hard and only needs to look good from the sidelines. I have not yet come up with the answer.

SCCA B Sedan racing involves lots of bumping and fender clanking.
Forget the pristine factory paint jobs, buy stock in Bondo, and get the cheapest paint job you can get..... you really don't need to ask me how I know.

Thanks for the loads of great input everyone. The picture of the Charger and the links really helped a lot. The paintjob on the charger looks killer, and I want that "semi-suede" look that it has, just in white instead. And yeah I know about Harbour Freight but they don't seem to have them in Colorado(it's affordable!) and the wal-mart route is more my style anyways. I really cant even afford to have my truck now but I love it too much to ever sell it and would like to just fix it up anyways. One of these days I will get a garage and fix up my truck the right way, but until then just making it more of a driver sounds great.

BTW I've found that a light sanding between coats is nothing compared to sanding a car initially or bodywork sanding. Once the truck is straight much less effort is needed because you just sand lightly everywhere, not a lot of thought is required it is more like drying the car. Hope that makes sense, cause i'm not even sure if it does.
Long day at work.

Nope, I got the point. I was just trying to point out other options besides using a roller and a few hundred hours of sanding on your vehicle.
You don't have to spend a lot of money on a cheap HVLP gun, you don't need a big compressor and you sure as hell don't need to spend $200 a quart on paint. Might cost a tad more than $50, but my point was there are always plenty of options for someone. And the same goes for opinions.

Reason this was so interesting to me, is because I have used Tremclad many times before, it is wonderful stuff, especially their old mercury-laced formula. My Dad and I painted the Model T 38 years ago with the stuff and it's still on there, just fine. Killed all the rust dead, we painted right over top of it. If something gets rubbed off, it's bare steel under there, the mercury soaked up all the rust, and we just give it a quick stroke with some more tremclad.
I personally have no place to paint a car by spray. There is no way in heck I could do it outside in the driveway in this windy country without painting the rest of my, and the neighbour's cars and houses too. So, should I ever decide to paint a car, this is pretty much the only solution for me. Can't say I am a huge fan of sanding, but it is pretty much the only viable option.
