Get your tip closer.

Are you using shielding gas? If not, that's about as good as they will look.

Like HawaiiKid said, as long as they hold!

Looking good.

They look good from the top side so I guess thats all that matters right?? haha. They are strong I took a hammer to them to make sure they hold under pressure
I tried both shielding and none, It was more an issue of lack of practice then anything, I did a bit more yesterday and It looked tons better.

Ironminor I am thinking I may have just found part of the problem with your welds :D. From where I am sitting it looks like theres paint right up to the edges of your truck and the patch panels . This wil be a problem you need to remove the paint at least 1/2 to 1 " back anywhere you are going to weld or your welds will be contaminated with the paint :D.

Remove the paint on both sides before welding .

if it aint broke fix it till it is :D

I agree you have to get rid of any paint rust grease undercoating or any other contaminent. Also you need to use a shielding gas. And then don't try to run any kind of bead. Just a spot every inch or so all the way around and then keep going round and round. This will prevent any warping of the metal.

I will hit them with a wire wheel, to clean that off. I am now using a shielding gas, so that has helped. The welds are strong, I just haven't quite mastered it yet, but hell thats why I bought an old truck! ha

I hope you took lots of dimentions of the cab mounts because I have yet to see anyone selling a cab mount that will actually fit. The drivers side is longer than the passenger side and they don't fit straight across. Some one on here, quite a while ago, made some drawings with dimentions that fit pretty good and I used his dimentions to make my patterns. I had to slightly modify them to fit our truck. I used poster board to make my patterns and to make sure they would fit correctly. Take your time and it will turn out good. It looks like you are getting the hang of welding in panels. One tip, cut all the rust out and make your panels fit as tight as you can. It's the big gaps that can cause problems. It's the learning process that is the fun part of these projects plus when you get it done you have had the satisfaction of having "done it with your own 2 hands and brain". Have fun and enjoy your project.

I agree with what Mike said and if you do happen to get a wide gap a piece of flatten copper line behind your weld will help as the rod or wire will not stick to it. It can also be helpful behind holes when you are trying to fill them. Check eastwood as they make some tools for this process. I have not used them myself but the next time I try to weld up holes I will give some of their tools a try. Nice work by the way. Work on my 63 has gone on hold for the summer Ill get back to it in the fall.

Hey all, I appreciate the comments. I have finished up the last couple patch panels for the bottom of the cab, now I have steps and then cab corners. But first of all is my cab mounts.... not very excited to tackle that project but I have the old cab mounts out and will be building them off a pattern I will make. Unfortunately I don't have money to buy them otherwise I would go that route.
