223 starter drive install

Post by dad&zach »

Anybody have any tips or easy ways to install the starter drive on the armature shaft of the starter? I have one of those shop manuals on CD and tried their guideline for placing the drive in a vise, insert the armature shaft in the drive and then lift on the starter to compress the drive so that you can get to the hole for the pin. Sounds good. Could not get the drive to compress at all. The whole process doesn't seem mechanically correct. Ideas, tips or suggestions welcome.

The only starter I had a problem with, I used two four inch c clamps to compress it. all the rest I have done I just push down on it and poke out the pin.

We got it. We squeezed the drive down with a bench vise and then slowly tapped the pin in until it was on. Not conventional, but it worked!
