Distributor Cap

Post by LM14 »

Here's a deal I found the other day, haven't seen it here yet. Sorry if somebody beat me to it and this is an old subject.

We always ran MSD HEI style "male" distributor caps on race motors. The plug wires stay tighter, you can get huge wires on the cap vs trying to stuff anything over stock into a "female" style cap. Most are large diameter and don't fit in just anywhere, either physically or aesthetically.

For those of us that prefer or, in my case need, a small diameter cap try this out. Ask for a 1979 IH Scout 5.7L cap. They are Ford style caps, take HEI style wires and only need one small modification to work. You need to spend 60 seconds filing the notch that sits down over the vacuum advance. It's shadowed in the cap, you just need to open it up.

They are available with aluminum or brass terminals. I suggest the brass. They are available everywhere. Here's a link to Summit. My local NAPA got me mine.

Hey SPark, this trick with the cap, what engine will it work for? Looking at your toys listed, I assume the FE motor. Will it work for the small blocks?

I have one on my FE and one on my Cleveland. It will fit the small cap old style 8 cylinder Ford distributors with the 2 clips holding them in place. Mine are both point style distributors.
