Slick 60's

I scored a set of door compartments yesterday. Was talking to my Dad about his truck and he said he sent the outer trim somewere got them all fixed and re chromed 20 years ago. Does anybody stil specialize in this? Id sure like to have the same done to mine.

Tyler, I had some done about the same time your dad did. I got Mr. Gs in Texas to do mine. $50 a piece then. $14 a hole to repair cracked screw holes.I didn't get the screw holes fixed jim

You and me both would be better off if we could find someone that makes them out of aluminum. Mine's brittle and falling apart along the bottoms. jim

Wayne was making them out of aluminum a few years back, they were spendy but will last forever.
guys in the MAC chapter probably can get a hold of him or know if hes still making them.

Don't know what aluminum ones would cost,but by the time you send the plastic ones off to rechrome them and repair a few screw holes,you'd probably end up with close to if not more than $100 per ring.Even if the metal ones were $150 a piece, it'd be money well spent IMHO.

A cheap, clever but not quite concours solution is to cut a steel door panel to leave only the inch or so around the perimeter.

Kevin. I would think that water jetting or laser cutting would be a snap once you get the program written. Maybe get several sets made "JUST IN CASE."

if i remember the big issue was the waste, as the entire center section of the plate is cut out. if something could be made from that section the cost would go down.

Wouldn't help with the drop-out waste, but maybe the step trim for the early trucks could be cut from the same blank? Go whole hog and punch out some instrument panel bezels?

Cut it in quarter sections & get better materials usage from the blanks…

Now if I can get time to go and find a door compartment trim so I can get the measurements off of it.
I guess that it would be the same size as the door panel.

There may be another way to make these. There is no reason they have to be solid, so they could be made out of sheetmetal, or sheet aluminum....or even stainless.
Using a Pulmax type machine with dies made to replicate the profile of the door compartment trim, it should be possible to make a suitable replacement....

If anyone has some decent pics, please post them, and I will consult several people I know about trying this for us.....

I will try for pics tomorrow. I have one virtualy perfect piece of trim that could be used as a mold maker or to make copies off of.
