coilovers and ride hieght
coilovers and ride hieght
hi everyone, does anybody know the average ride hieght adjustments that can be made with coilovers?. Im buying a mustang 2 next week from hiedts and dont know if i should get coils or coilovers, im trying to figure out ride height as accurate as possible so i can order the right parts. thanks everybody
Re: coilovers and ride hieght
This will be totally dependent on crossmember brand, lower control arm brand and what you want for a final ride height. You can also get coilovers with heim ends, rubber ends or the stock ends to fit a MII setup. You need to know what you are going to use when you order the crossmember and lower a-frames. The upper shock mounts are different and the lower a-frames are different.
I would suggest calling the manufacturer you are getting the crossmember/lower a-frames from and asking their recommendation. Same for valving and spring rate.
A combo for the coilover vs stock spring shock is the Pro Shocks brand setup.

Lets you use the stock location for the shock, the special spring and still have some adjustment for ride height.
Good luck,

Re: coilovers and ride hieght
sweet. thanks for the link
Re: coilovers and ride hieght
I believe the coil over is not the best choice for heavy trucks as the upper bracket is pretty small compared to the coil spring upper weld on piece. I have repaired a few coil over brackets which broke the welds after hitting a pothole,
why put off till tommorow what you can put off alltogether
Re: coilovers and ride hieght
If you look at the link I gave him, it's a coilover that uses the stock mounts and a special spring in the traditional spring mount on top and coliover on the bottom. That way you have the full size spring, the normal shock mounts for a MII setup and still have ride height adjustment and a choice of 2 different stroke lengths on the shock.

thanks again guys
Re: coilovers and ride hieght
Broken coil over mounts would be the result of poor welds or badly designed mounts - you can't just slap a couple tiny tabs on the framerails and call it good. Properly designed and installed coil over mounts would be perfectly fine. The bigger issue is going to be front end geometry if you try to adjust ride height much past where it's designed to sit if you intend to drive the truck.
