I grew up within a couple hundred miles of Canada's largest Rodeo, even closer to about 1/2 dozen of it's smaller ones. I have known at least as many cowboys of the genuine type as I have of the drugstore variety, Several of my first cousins were rodeo or barrel riding champions, at least one of my female cousins was a rodeo Queen. (Not one of them would get within a hundred miles of a Gay rodeo without a lynch rope handy.)
I hardly know a soul that DOESN'T own a cowboy hat...
But I have NEVER seen one of those.
Thanks Banjo, for that little bit of wisdom.

Not many cowboy hats in all of Ohio
Thanks for the info, the ricers up here will get a kick out of it.
Someday I'll get another slick

I think that real cowboys wear hats that are usually not so purdy that they have to keep them fancy in a special hat rack. Perhaps the closer you are to real cow country the less you see the hat racks.

I've only seen those hat holders two places - New Mexico .. and Ohio. I've seen a lot of them in both, though.[/quote]

Plenty of 'em around here in central/south TX (as real cow country as it gets), seen 'em since I was a kid. Good stuff! I'd keep it, but find a nice vintage hat to store in there to make it worthwhile.

I used to see those fairly often around my small northern Arizona hometown. They didn't flip down like that one though, they looked more like a big fork & you just slid your hat into it.
BTW, those same trucks usually also had gun racks in the back window, CB mike's hanging from the rear view mirror by their cords & a big chain between the front frame rails, in a U shape.
I thought all that was totally normal, until I moved away.

First time I ever saw one of those was on a Friend's '72 Ford truck. He grew up on a ranch in Missouri. When I asked him what it was he looked at me like I was from Mars. He thought every truck came with one!

Those are not for keeping "city cowboy" hats "perfect." The true purpose is safety, it's damn hard to see where you are going with your lid stuck down over your eyes. It's also pretty hard to steer when have both fists gripped on the brim trying to get it back off.
Did we all forget how a Slick rides?

When you and the guys went to the bar in high school, the guy that got stuck in the middle always had to put his lid up there and if your girl wore a hat it was hard to put your arm around her when she sat next to ya. In the old days when my dad started the police department his patrol car came with one installed. Never figured that one out, since the department didn't wear cowboy hats back then; I guess it was an option. pretty cool. huh
