Tire Size

Post by bmcgc »

I ran across a nice set of 15x7 F150 Aluminum wheels with nearly new 265-70-15s for sale locally that I can get for a sweet price.

How will that size wheel and tire fill the wheel wells on my LWB 66?

I like the taller tire, it pulls the rpms down a bit a speed.

I had planned on running a 235-75-15 whitewall on 6.5 fronts and 8 rears to even out the track but Im not having much luck finding the outie wheels I want at the pick-n-pull.

Find a tire size chart that will provide the actual diameter. I run 30.5x9.5's on the front and 31.5x10.5's on the rear of my short bed. They fit nicely, the 235x75x15 look a little small to me.

Summit Racings website gives tire diameters for most any size tire . The 2 examples you give from general Tire are 265/70-15 29.60 diameter and 235/75-15 is 29.00 diameter .

265-70-15

265mm wide = 265mm / 25.4mm/in = 10.43in Wide

265 x 70% Side Wall Height = (265 x .7) / 25.4 = 7.30in

Total tire Diameter = 7.30in x 2 + 15in = 29.60in

Those will be ok. 29 to 31 in is a good truck tire size.

I'd be more concerned with the back spacing on the wheels, than the tire size. The tires will fit fine, if the wheel is spec'd right.

I was planning on keeping a 4 in back spacing since all the extra room is on the outside.

I like the whitewalls but the biggest tire I have found with them is a 235-75-15 and I would really like to go taller than a 29in tire.

Will a 4" backspace on a 7" wide rim and that wide a tire fit your truck? Are those wheels 4" backspace?

If all of the room is on the outside, you want less backspace, particularly with a wider tire, assuming that everything else is about the same. The backspace, rim width, and tire width all need to be considered.

If you use the same backspace with approximately the same width rim and a wider tire, the tire will move to the inside AND outside relative to a previous, smaller tire. Less backspace pushes it to the outside for adequate clearance on the inside.

i managed to run a 4 inch back space, or a 8 inch wheel with no offset (i think those are the same) with a 275 tire and did some rubbing on some off camber driveway entrances, etc. just enough to rub some paint off the inner fender, but never had any scrub issues on the tires. i say 4" with a bit of over sizing on the tire will be fine.

Well if ya don't mind spending a few bucks may I present 285/70-15 of whitewall badness :D.

I wouldn't call any kind of rubbing a good fit. Also, with an 8" rim, the center line of the tire will move out, everything else being equal on a narrower rim. If the rim width is significant enough, it can completely offset the bulge of a wider tire and work, again, everything else being equal. The proposed 7" wide rim is nearly stock (I think 6.5" is stock) and if the backspace is the same, a wider tire has a good chance of rubbing if clearances are already close on the inside.

Stock rim width is 5.5

Later F150s had a 7 or 8 rim with 4in backspace.

Remember offset is the distance of the mounting surface from the center of the rim while backspace is the distance from the inside edge of the rim to the mounting surface. We are only concerned with backspacing and total rim width on our trucks.

Those 285-70-15 WWW are badass, to much for the front, but they would make a nice rubber rake on a Slick. And, with a 31.5in tall tire I wouldn't need the 2.75 gears to cruise on the interstate.

Oh, ok. I think you said you have 225/70s on stock rims in a previous thread. So those tires and wheels, assuming 4" backspace, will move the tire about 1/8" toward the inner fender and about 1 5/8 toward the outer fender relative to what you currently have, if I have done my math right.

Maybe you can negotiate to try one on before you commit to buy, just to make sure.

The seller had these rims on a dent so I don't see any problems on a Slick. I think they are the oem aluminum F150 rims from a 93-96 truck.

Im going to make a lowball offer, it isn't exactly what I want so Im not going to pay top dollar.
