Slick4x4 rebuild of a farm truck

Post by slick4x4 »

Well, I finally got the courage to post a build on here......
Drove my 'Blue Thunder into the shop this morning
Image

This is what it looked like at 5 pm.... My mom (she's 87) asked me why I ripped up my truck
Image

My plans ?
Out with the 223, in with 300 with headers & 4bbl intake & c6 auto trans
Dual brake master cylinder
Rebuild steering box
Refurbish interior
New wood in bed floor
New paint

Not going for car show quality.... Just make it a nice running farm truck to use

The jump from the 223 to 300 was the best mod I have done to my truck so far.
For every person with a spark of genius, there are a hundred with ignition trouble

My '63 short wrongbed

"The Iron Rhino"
300 I6, 3 spd manual, DS II/ HEI ignition.

Stuff I added to Hints and tricks

-300-6 choke tube repair
-duraspark II/ HEI
-Horn ring contact tube repair
-turn signal indicator fix

Mikhail Kalashnikov and Nikola Tesla are the guys i think of when i build things.

After a 2 year stop... I'm finally able to get in gear !
Hopefully get this on the road in 2016 !
I want to do everything I listed....
With the change to a 390 on propane instead of the 300 i6

You know Pat, I`ve never driven a Slick ....... is it going to have power steering and what colour are you going to paint it ? ...

Oh and back to my story, I have never driven a Slick in America, or one with left hand drive. I have ridden in a lot tho and it`s kind of weird ! :D
Honey, If I say I`ll fix something I will, there`s no need to remind me every 6 months!!

Running it on propane, you could have a grille in the front and a grill in the bed.

Rear leafs disassembled , cleaned , wiped with oil & put back together
Took out bottom 4 leafs
(They are straight & only used when you have a very heavy load)
I installed a 3" block wich gave me about 1 3/4" lift
I re-arched the fronts years ago & they are about 2" above stock
New u-bolts and shackle bushings also

Out with the bad.... In with the new
Using treated lumber... 1x6 boards
They measure 3/4" thick ( which is the same)
But only 5 1/2" wide (the original truck bed are 6")
But doesn't really matter, the tin rails cover the gap anyway
Wood , New bolts & washers.... Got it all at Lowes for $60

Bed floor done ....
Rebuilding the bed I decided to "make it better than factory"
At least in my opinion....
Where the row of bolts that just had washers, I made a strap
Out of 1 1/2" by 3/16 ... and bolted it to the underside... Much
More support for just a small addition

Setting the 390 in...
Fabricated some engine mounts out of parts & pieces collected over years
Transmission mount needs fab too
Going to have to shorten the driveshaft between trans & transfer case

Way to go Pat! Bet you will not have any trouble keeping up with the gang
on those road trips with that FE between the rails. Probably more like keeping
tires with tread on it now. HeeHee! :steering: Keep up the good work!
Love the floor job on the bed too! TR
