cruise o matic to c 6 question

Post by Country »

Planning to stay with the long bed for a driver rebuild, but I want to replace cruise o automatic trans with a c 6. I understand that a drive shaft adjustment and cross member will need to be done. My question is: I have a green dot rebuilt steering column works great. Will I have to change the column out or will the shift patterns on the column be the same as the c 6 shift pattern?

The overall length of the replacement transmission needs to be the same as your cruise o matic. You will need a big bell C6 for your 352. If the drive shaft length or yoke needs to be modified any local drive line shop will be able to handle that. The steering column will work as is and a PRND21 shift indicator will fit as well. I would collect all the parts and then have at it. These transmissions are heavy and unless you have the equipment necessary to do this work I'd take it to a Transmission shop. One more thing, if it ain't broke don't fix it. IMHO

I did the c-6 swap several years ago,,as William pointed out, you'll need to locate a round top c-6.Installation was fairly easy,my front drive shaft was reworked for length, and the cross member worked w/o modifications. My only problem was the kick down and shift rods, the tranny shift arms needed to be heated and bent, that caused stress cracks to appear later. However Ford has many different arms for the c-6,a local supply house kept a box full of these with some trial and error I found a set that fit the application. Also your shift indicator will not land on D. My c-6 has been working trouble free for six years, and it is a daily driver work truck.I have yet to change the Speedo gear,it shows about 10% above actual speed.
Good luck,

The above was done to a 66 250c/s &352

here is one thing over looked that is a problem the 65/66 stock trucks use a different indent plate than the C-6 67/77 trucks use and will not allow you to shift your truck in 1st gear manually the indent plate is under the turn signal switch, when you have the 2 side by side you will see why it will not allow to shift manually

C6 from a Galaxie 20 years ago but I remember clamping a lever to the shifter lever on transmission. This allowed me to shift manually. Little things I remember doing but I made it work. I did have a few drive shafts made but none for the bolt up yoke. I took a couple from Lincolns and had them cut.
