I am having trouble though devising the shaft interface between the engine and electric motor. I don't know if the electric motor should control the connection, or the engine should control the connection, or if the driver should control the connection.
Or should I just use the engine as a generator and not connect it to the drive train at all.

Hummm.... Just typing out loud.

Small gas engine, to trans with a PTO generator. Out of tail shaft to electric drive motor.

Off battery you could put t-case in neutral and drive wheels with electric.
Batt dead you could run engine and PTO generator and electric drive.
Or gas only ... Engage the t-case and drive wheels right through the electric motor.
Maybe your racing you could run both at same time. LoL.
