Slick 60's

We are broke down in Amarillo Texas. Trailer bearing out and we lost the brake drum, wheel and tire. I don't have any idea where the tire and wheel even went. We stopped at a rest stop and it was gone. We have a shop replacing the spindle so we can get home and then I will have to replace the axle.

Kevin that's bad news,, ,, I 've lost tires before with just the rim sitting there,, at least in Amarillo I would believe several trailer places to get you going

Got a new spindle put on so now it only has 3 brakes. We got going and made it 5 miles down the road and blew up the spare. Now we are sitting in Discount Tire waiting on a new tire.

Chin up kevin. You'll make it home eventually. Lol

Sorry to hear that, Kevin! Not to hi-jack, but we had a similar experience in almost the exact location where the old tow truck stopped running two years ago on the way home.
After working on the trailer brakes prior to departing Altoona, we hit the road and stopped in Northern OK for the night again, following my ritual of scanning all wheels at every stop. All normal this time! We leave Skiatook with a little more slick cargo, hit the Indian Nation Turnpike south of Tulsa. In what has become the usual situation while towing Dale's slick, we struck up a conversation with a couple who have a slick as well as a daughter in a hospital in Tulsa. We talked for some time, told them of Slick 60's and Slickstock, and they headed south. I scanned the wheels with no evidence of heat or other maladies. We caught up with them after a while and waved as we passed. Immediately. I see the left front trailer tire go airborne by about 15 feet, only missing their windshield by the grace of God! The gentleman had watched it sail into a fence and they stopped to check on us and tell us the tire location. The wheel and tire are intact with heavy wallowing around the lug holes. I then noticed the stick-on weights amounting to well over a pound total. All other lugs on truck and trailer are correctly tight. All lugs are missing from the hub, with one still attached to the wheel, nut and all!

It sounds like we both had a lot of the same bad luck.
I didn't even know that the wheel and tire were gone so I didn't even attempt to go back and look for it.
We unloaded the 63 and Beth drove it into Amarillo so we could get the trailer repaired. If the trans wasn't giving me problems, I would have had her drive it on into Phoenix and repaired the trailer after I got home but I couldn't take a chance on burning up a trans. The trailer has torsion axles under it so it would have towed fine with only 3 wheels but not with the truck in it.
We finally got home about 2:00 on Tuesday afternoon. What a trip it was but we still had a good time.

With the "hybrid" brake system, I am going to add a pair of " loaded" electric backing plates, hubs, and drums to my survival kit! Thanks to Darrell, we were able to find everything in Des Moines, as well as, surprisingly, in Skiatook. I just want to be anticipate any failures and be prepared; as well as understand and prevent this failure of new parts!
Glad you made it in; I know Dale mostly enjoyed his extended drive, and I imagine Beth did, too, despite the circumstances!

My saga continues, again! My wife and I started up the Lake Charles I-10 bridge, no trailer this trip; just at sun-up; several vehicles incuding mine; hit some road debris. It appeared to have not hurt the wheel, just shredded the tire by the time we got off the bridge. Removal indicated that about 300 degrees of the inner rim was long gone. So much for the Chinese Chebby factory imitation Torque Thrusts! I think Dale's "dark cloud" has adopted me!
Aw, well, once again we made it safely, and encountered (almost) no rain! Now, from our 24th floor viewpoint, one can't tell the Gulf from the sky, and it's raining nearly vertically!

I was going to tow some of my vehicles to long distance shows but I am beginning to think its more of a pain to haul them and just build them to be driven.

I agree; the only downside of that is, when the occasional failure occurs, you can't just unload the slick and head to civilization!

LIKE WOW,, And here I was beginning to think I was alone on bad trips,, we made it home But that's when the fun started, Monday Ford put the pipe on the exhaust, went down next day for routine service and found on the rollback wheel seal leaking, well back again to Ford, roads is all I can think of is that the bearing was bent and tore the seal up. spent 1 1/2 days there, got back hooked trailer to go to Sedona, Az, made as far as meridian MS flat tire spent 4 hours in line of trucks @ truckstop to put spare, could not even buy a new tire, tire places where on backorder,, Kathy called this place in Odessa, TX and they had one so we had to run that far without a spare... anyway got the unloaded...

Kevin it's pretty nice scenery up here in Sedona, nice looking red rocks too many tourist's the side roads well we had to go down 3 side roads that was not made for us back in a road up to garage door now that was fun,, any glad to see we all over coming this and go forward
