The place to talk Slicks. All we ask is that discussion has something to do with slicks...

Dual Tanks

Post by Yellardawg »

Did the Slicks ever come with dual tanks????

I ask because I was under the truck this morning and could smell fumes...so I checked the fuel line (dry rot) and found a petcock with an extra fuel line on it going to no where. Unhooked it and ran a new single hose.

The 62 uni I've been stripping has the same setup, but no second tank. Might have been in the bed at one time, it looks like an oilfield truck.

Mine originally came from Missourri. I unhooked the petcock and removed it from the floor (one bolt holding it in).....anyone need one? There is no handle on it.

My 1st 66' had dual tanks, the petcock was under the driverside seat, on the side by the door.

That's where this was. Where was the second tank?

My brothers 63 had a second tank in the box, just a rectangular box, with the selector under the seat at the drivers door. Not sure if the tank was factory or just home built by the previous owner.

Interesting that this came up because recently I was in my 'library' (ahem) reading my '64 Shop Manual and in the Fuel System (Section 10), it lists 3 standard fuel systems:

1. Standard 18 gallon fuel tank for F-series (in cab).
2. Standard 17 gallon fuel tank for F-series cowl models or P-series is mounted on insulated brackets and straps inside the frame side rail.
3. The optional F-350 18 gallon fuel tank and the P-350, P-400, and P-500 30 gallon fuel tanks were mounted on insulated brackets and straps located on the outside of the frame left side rail.

Through my travels, I've seen quite a few Slicks & later trucks with these doors on the beds that I believe to either be factory options, or dealer add-on's...

Image

I discovered that there's gas caps behind those doors, leading to extra tanks. If you look just below the body in this pic, you can see the square bottom of the extra tank.

This truck has two extras.

I've also seen some Slicks (mainly 4x4's with fridge beds) with a filler tube sitting just inside the rear wheel well opening...so you reach inside the wheel well to gas up.
I don't know if that style were factory or dealer add-ons, or what.
My "Slickitis" affliction began here...

My 66 has two extra tanks much like thise in the pictures. The PO took two empty ammo cans and made a set of 17 gallon tanks. A 2x6 on each side and some strapping and they have gone over 300,000 miles with no problems. The truck is being parted out so I might just pull these off to really have a llok see.

Used to be able to buy from aftermarket places most any type of auxillary tank srtup you wanted. Don't know if they are still there or not, Quality Bumper on Grand Avenue in Phoenix was where I bought that underslung type tank and that type of fuel door. That would have been about 1972.
