ruff week, loosing a family member

Post by stronger66ratfink »

if it wasn't bad enough that I've been battling Brachiates for the last two weeks,
now I think we know it's time to say goodbye to Miss Bell,
our 16 year old German Shepard golden Retriever mix.
she's been on the down stroke for some time but still very happy,
but now her rear legs / knees have given out and can hardly stand
doc yesterday said she was in pain and for now gave us some meds to help but she won't take them.

Hate to do it but would rather put a sharp stick in my eye than see what of our family members suffer.

16 years is a very long life for a large dog. when they can no longer stand up and their quality of life declines you must, as tough as it is, make the right choice.
been there more times than i care to think about and its never easy.

Two times, both black labs.Last one the vet told me, He's going lay down and he won't get up,I tried for two hours to get him up.He just looked at me,Do something,so I made the call. The vet came to the house an hour later. Its never easy, you end their pain and feel bad/good,that's what is crazy about it...sorry for you and your family.

Yeah, its tough. My 14 year old spitz is blind now, and a few months ago his hips and hind legs gave out. He wouldn't eat and barely moved. Crawled into my lap and whimpered and whined. Took him to the vet and got arthritis meds. He didn't want them either, so I put them in peanut butter. Ate 'em right up! Now he gets around almost as well as he used to, but he still can't see...

Sorry to here that man. We just had to put down our Eskimo Spitz 2 weeks ago. He had kidney failure. Meds helped for a while but he got to where he wouldn't eat and barely drank water. Knowing we did the right thing for him didn"t make me feel any better about the whole thing, but it had to be done. I really felt guilty about it and was about to throw up but i didn't. It's going to take a while to get over it. The sharp stick in the eye would prolly hurt less.
