Thought i would say HI!

Post by northern »

Well its been a few days, and I should say hi and introduce my self.

My name is Marc.
I live in Alaska, about 12 miles out side Wasilla.
Im married and i have a 6 year old son ( big cars and trucks fan )

Enuff about me, time for the truck.

I bought a 65 f100 style side LB and had hopes of rebuilding it, but the more i got into it, the gloomier it looked. rust here, rust there, missing this missing that. ( so it now a parts truck untill i run out of useful parts. )

One day i was looking around a found another 65, but this time it was a shortbed stepside, inquired about it and took it home that day.

cerrently it has a 351w/c6 setup
i have a 9inch in it with some good highway gears. i have the old low gears and axles if needed, but doughtful. lol
the drivers door was hurt badly, some one had backed up with the door open and krinkeled the door, so i have a door from another truck on it.
a shame too, the oem door had the door pocket, but it will be moved over to the new one.

And cerrently hunting down a set of inner fenders, front and rear fenders, and some skins for the kicker panels up to the floor vents. one hubcap, two stock steel wheels.

I have hopes of keeping it simi stock, but with a slightly lower stance and updated power brakes / power stearing.

Hello Northern, and welcome to Slick 60's 8)

Do me a favor, refer to your Flareside box as Flareside, unless you actually do have a GM Stepside box on your 65 Slick.

As for the fenders, there are several guys here that may help you out with that. Most of the stuff you are huntimg sounds like salvage yard or Donor sourced stuff.

I'm not sure what you are calling kicker panels?

@ shawns fords

Thanks.

@ FORDBOYpete

I understand your request, but

looking in the LMC,MAC's and the Dennis Carpenter books, its discribes it as a stepside, and many other sites show it as a stepside, even in this site, but ive also seen it as a flareside.

When did ford tag the name ( Flareside ) ?

as for the kicker panel, its infront of the door, down by your feet.

Ive noticed i have fellow Alaskans here, and not to far away.

finding parts in a wrecking yard/boneyard here is almost impossible, and in salvageable shap in another storie.

( It not my intent to be mean or to step on any feet, so please dont be upset at me if you read this post wrong. )

Marc.

I dont remember them being called flaresides until the F150 flaresides came out in the early 90s. where it looked like a stepside but the fenders were flared out more with more of a "streamlined" sorta appearance.

Welcome aboard, nice looking project! :hello:

I've always called 'em stepsides too, but I'm also not very politically correct either.

FBP is right, flareside is the "proper" Ford term. During the 70s chebby stepside trucks became quite popular, name kinda washed over onto all conventional box trucks. Catalogs use the term to not confuse the inexperienced.
Used to be the only kind of box that you could get on a pickup til the 50s.

Hey Northern.
Welcome from the second largest state.
Guys.
He's talking about the kick panels under the dash where the side vents go.
Cut them out and weld in some new metal.
I'm betting the drain area behind that side vent is clogged completely up with trash and holding water. Clean it out asap.
Check the underside of your dash under the slotted vents in front of the window. You might have rust holes there too............. = wet feet.
BTW, you need to look up Brian aka Iceman in Talknena (Iceman, did I spell that right?) and a couple of others up your way.
We're glad to have you.

Hey Northern, welcome to the club. Uncle Skip is right. That lower vent on the outside, between the end of the fender and you "kick panel" is either full of crap or rusted. It's not the easiest of repairs. Mine was totally gone, but I live in the "rust belt".

I was wondering what he was talking about, and with the pictures, i can see what he was talking about. Thanks.

Im still fighting the front finders( inner and outer ), core support, grill.
Rust, missing metal, and many years of road tar make for a good chalange.

are there patch panel for these places, or do i need to go get some sheet metal and make my own?

There are no patch panels for the lower cowl kick panel area. Pretty easy to fab up though or cut a good section from a donor. I rebuilt the drivers side of my Uni, was pretty much gone. Here is link to pics in my album of the repair. Let me know if I can help or get you more pics.

@ brojohnak

You got mail.

Ive been attempting to dismantal the front clip, but with the rusty, locked solid nuts and bolts, along with the nuts that move and little to no room to access them, its been fun. i have yet to gain access to remove the fenders, ( spinning nuts and all ) im almost ready to use the diegrinder to the fender skins. ( the fenders are holy ).

after this it should be easier to gain access to view the rest of it, and it will be easier to access the motor to rebuild it. ( it dropes down to 10 psi after it warms up. )\

Hey Marc, welcome to the world of "What the heck were they thinking" on the bolts holing these things together. You may have figured it out but there is a bolt that holds the top of the fender, on the interior through a squarish hole above the vent on the kick panel, If you knew about it sorry, it's a question that comes up alot. Good luck.
